INTRODUCTION
Svetlana: Привет! С вами RussianPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 9 - It’s All About Who You Know in Russia. Я Светлана.
Elena: А я Елена. Привет.
Svetlana: In this lesson we will learn how to form adjectives by using prefixes in Russian. There are a lot of ways to form adjectives in Russian
Elena: But in this lesson, we will focus on just one of them.
Svetlana: The conversation takes place in a cafe.
Elena: And it’s between Marina and Olga.
Svetlana: Let's see what kind of advice Olga gives Marina about Marina's job hunting.
Elena: The speakers are friends, so they will be using informal Russian.
Svetlana: Let's listen to the conversation.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Elena: Right!
Svetlana: Okay! Now onto the vocab.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Svetlana: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Elena: What’s the first one?
Svetlana: The first key phrase for this lesson is an expression, между делом
Elena: “at odd times”, “in the meantime”
Svetlana: Опять мы встречаем слово Дело. Уверенна, вы уже можете определить значение этого слова.
Elena: В данном случае ДЕЛО может означать любое занятие.
Svetlana: “Между делом” имеет значение- “В промежутках между основными занятиями”, “попутно”.
Elena: Например Он уже успел сходить на пробежку и приготовить завтрак, а еще между делом позвонил своей девушке.
Svetlana: “He already managed to go for a run, make his breakfast, and call his girlfriend!”
Elena: I think the meaning is clear, so let's move on to the next word.
Svetlana: The next one is an adverb, как раз
Elena: It has two meanings - “just”, “exactly like this” and “fitting well”
Svetlana: Например. Ты как раз во время, я только что приготовила ужин.
Elena: “You are just in time, I have just finished cooking dinner”
Svetlana: And here is an example with the meaning “fitting well”
Elena: Платье, которое мне прислала мама из Москвы, мне как раз.
Svetlana: A dress, which mother sent me from Moscow, fits me well.
Elena: Okay! And what is the last key vocab for this lesson?
Svetlana: It’s a proverb, за спрос денег не берут
Elena: “it doesn't hurt to ask” or “it won't cost you anything if you ask” or “Better to ask the way than to go astray.”
Svetlana: The translation is quite straightforward so we will just give you an example with this proverb.
Elena: Я думаю, стоит спросить есть ли рабочие вакансии в этой компании, в конце-концов за спрос денег не берут.
Svetlana: “I think it is worth asking if this company has job openings, it won't hurt you if you ask after all.”
Elena: Exactly!
Svetlana: Okay, great job! Now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Svetlana: In this lesson, you will learn how to form adjectives by using prefixes in Russian.
Elena: This is very interesting because many prefixes in Russian have their own meanings.
Svetlana: So you will be able to use the words you already know, and add a specific prefix to add specific meanings to the word
Elena: That will really help you expand your vocabulary.
Svetlana: Okay, let's start!
Elena: В нашем диалоге мы встречаем прилагательное безработный “unemployed”
Svetlana: которое образовано от существительного Работа “work” и приставки -Без, которая обозначает “without”
Elena: Например если соединить приставку -Без и существительное Голос “voice”
Svetlana: Мы получим словосочетание Без голоса “without voice”
Elena: или прилагательное Безголосый “Voiceless”.
Svetlana: There are some nuances when writing this prefix with the root of a noun.
Elena: Right! In some cases, you should write this prefix with the consonant З at the end, and sometimes with C.
Svetlana: To find out when to use which, please check the lesson notes.
Elena: Moving on! The next prefix that helps us form adjectives is HE and НЕБЕЗ.
Svetlana: I am sure you already understand the meaning of those! They are “not” and “not without”
Elena: Все что нам нужно сделать, так это прибавить одну из этих приставок к основе уже готового прилагательного. Например
Svetlana: Спортивный “sporty”, добавляем приставку НЕ и получаем “неспортивный” “not sporty”
Elena: Или например Известный “famous” c приставкой НЕБЕЗ, Небезызвестный “well-known”
Svetlana: Surprisingly, the last example, even by adding a prefix, still had almost the same meaning as the original adjective.
Elena: Right! Two negative prefixes in the same construction actually create a positive meaning here, so that something is what the adjective describes.
Svetlana: Okay! Our next prefix is ПРЕ- which is usually used to mean Очень “very”
Elena: Например. долгий - предолгий
Svetlana: “long - very long”
Elena: добрый - предобрый
Svetlana: “kind - very kind”
Elena: And the last prefix we would like to introduce is СВЕРХ-
Svetlana: It is used to add the meaning of “superiority”
Elena: Например звуковой - сверхзвуковой
Svetlana: “sonic - supersonic”
Elena: прибыльный - сверхприбыльный
Svetlana: “profitable - super/very profitable”

Outro

Elena: Okay! That’s it for this lesson.
Svetlana: Don't forget to check the lesson notes for more examples and explanations.
Elena: You will also find other prefixes that were borrowed from foreign languages
Svetlana: Ones that we haven't mentioned in this lesson.
Elena: In our next lesson, you will learn about the gerund in Russian.
Svetlana: We will also hear about some very exciting news that Misha receives.
Elena: So stay tuned. До скорого
Svetlana: Пока -пока
