INTRODUCTION
Svetlana: Привет! С вами RussianPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 6 - Make the Most of Your Life in Russia! Я Светлана.
Elena: А я Елена. Привет.
Svetlana: In this lesson, you will learn about the verb endings -ться/тся in Russian.
Elena: It is a very simple grammar rule, but a lot of people still make mistakes when writing those endings.
Svetlana: In this lesson, we will also introduce you to a new character, Marina's friend, Olga
Elena: Apparently Marina is having a hard time trying to find a job.
Svetlana: So Olga is cheering her up.
Elena: The conversation takes place in a cafe.
Svetlana: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Russian.
Elena: Let's listen to the conversation.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Svetlana: Okay. Now, let’s move onto the vocab.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Svetlana: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first key phrase for this lesson is an expression, Стучаться в закрытые двери
Elena: “to knock on closed doors”
Svetlana: Although the translation is quite straightforward, we’ll give you another interpretation of this phrase - “hopelessly trying to reach out to somebody or something”. For example...
Elena: “Сколько можно уже стучаться в закрытые двери! Он тебя разлюбил!”
Svetlana: “Enough knocking on closed doors! He doesn't love you anymore.”
Elena: Выражение “закрытые двери” чаще всего используется в переносном смысле.
Svetlana: Верно! В значении чего-то безнадежного, навсегда упущенного.
Elena: Okay I think it’s clear now! What’s the next word?
Svetlana: An expression не вешать нос
Elena: It is an encouraging expression that can be translated as “Cheer up!” or “Keep your chin up”
Svetlana: Это выражение стало часто использоваться в повседневной лексике после выхода на экран фильма “Гардемарины, вперёд!”
Elena: Где главный герой подбадривал своих друзей и вдохновлял их на подвиги.
Svetlana: эта фраза означает “Cheer up!” or “Keep your chin up”- but actually, this literally means “not to hang one's nose”
Elena: Но мы заменяем слово nose на head и говорим
Svetlana: “Keep your head up”
Elena: Okay what is the next word for this lesson?
Svetlana: The next one is витать в облаках
Elena: “to be up in the clouds” or “daydreaming”
Svetlana: Это выражение используется для того, чтобы описать состояние, когда человек о чем-то мечтает или фантазирует и совершенно не помнит о земных делах и заботах.
Elena: Да! Так часто говорят о влюбленных людях, романтиках, потому что они зачастую немного наивны.
Svetlana: Например: “Хватит тебе витать в облаках. Лучше делом займись.”
Elena: “Enough dreaming. Do something!”
Svetlana: Иногда глагол витать может быть заменен глаголом парить, но значение от этого не изменится. Например.
Elena: “От него никакой пользы, он все время парит в облаках.”
Svetlana: “He is useless, his head is always somewhere up in the clouds.”
Okay great job! Now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Svetlana: In this lesson, we are going to take a look at the verb endings -ТЬСЯ and -ТСЯ.
Elena: Why do some of the verbs end in -ться, and some of them in -тся?
Svetlana: There are several verbs that end with either -ТЬСЯ or -ТСЯ.
Elena: Here they are “трудоустроиться”
Svetlana: “to get hired”
Elena: “заканчиваются”
Svetlana: “end” (conjugated form)
Elena: “стучаться”
Svetlana: “to knock”
Elena: “занимаются”
Svetlana: “do” (conjugated form for the third person plural)
Elena: “хватаются”
Svetlana: “grab” (conjugated form for the third person plural)
Elena: В первую очередь необходимо запомнить, что глагол в словарной форме всегда пишется с Ь в окончании -ТЬСЯ. Например.
Svetlana: “Думаю, мы сможем договориться по поводу цены за товар.”
Elena: I think we could negotiate the price of the goods.
Svetlana: Глагол несовершенного вида в словарной форме всегда отвечает на вопрос- Что делать?
Elena: В то время как глагол совершенного вида - Что сделать?
Svetlana: Так вот, запомните, глаголы, которые отвечают на вопрос Что делать? или Что сделать? должны писаться с окончанием -ТЬСЯ. Например
Elena: “Нам пора собираться в путешествие, уже 8 часов.
Svetlana: “We have to get ready for the trip, it’s 8 o'clock already”
Elena: Глагол собираться отвечает на вопрос Что делать, поэтому пишется с окончанием -ТЬСЯ.
Svetlana: Если глагол отвечает на вопрос Что делает/ что сделает? в окончании пишется -ТСЯ без Ь. Например.
Elena: “Если очень верить, желание обязательно сбудется.”
Svetlana: “If you strongly believe in your dream, it will come true.”
Elena: В большинстве случаев глагол будет сочетаться с существительным или местоимением третьего лица.
Svetlana: Местоимениями третьего лица являются ОН, ОНА, ОНИ, ОНО. Например.
Elena: “Кажется, собирается дождь.”
Svetlana: “It seems it will rain”.
Elena: For more examples and explanations, please take a look at the lesson notes.
Svetlana: You will also find other grammar rules that explain when Ь should be written in the verb endings.
Elena: Okay, that’s it for this lesson. In the next lesson we will learn how to combine the negative particle HE with adverbs.

Outro

Svetlana: Thanks for listening everyone! Come back soon!
Elena: Спасибо вам большое и до скорой встречи!
Svetlana: Пока-пока
