Yura: Top 25 Russian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 5: Do you speak Russian? (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Russian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Do you speak Russian?" In Russian, this is
Svetlana: ты говоришь по-русски?
The first word in the question is
Svetlana: ты
Yura: meaning “you" in English.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) ты
Yura: Listen again and repeat.
Svetlana: ты

Yura: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is

Svetlana: нет я не говорю по-русски.
Yura: Which is like saying no i don`t. in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Svetlana: (Slowly) нет я не говорю по-русски.
Yura: And one more time at normal speed:
Svetlana: нет я не говорю по-русски.
Yura: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Svetlana: да
Yura: meaning yes.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) да
Yura: Now repeat

Yura: Now you want to answer that you speak fluently Respond to the question.
Svetlana: ты говоришь по-русски? (five seconds) да, я говорю свободно .
Yura: You want to answer that you speak a little . . Answer the speaker's question.
Svetlana: ты говоришь по-русски? (five seconds) да, я говорю чуть-чуть .
Yura: Now you want to answer that you speak so so . Respond to the question.
Svetlana: ты говоришь по-русски? (five seconds) да, я говорю так себе.
Yura: Now you want to know ask someone if they speak Russian. Ask the question
(5 seconds)
