Yura: Top 25 Russian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 23: Whose is this? in Russian (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Russian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Whose is this?" In Russian this is
Svetlana: это чьё?
The first word in the question is
Svetlana: это
Yura: "meaning this/it" in English.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) это
Yura: Listen again and repeat.
Svetlana: это
{Pause}
Yura: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Svetlana: чье
Yura: meaning whose.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) чье
Yura: Now repeat.
Svetlana: чье

Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Svetlana: это чье
{pause}
Yura: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question Whose is this??

Yura: "It's mine.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Yura: meaning this/it.

Yura: Now repeat

meaning mine.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) моё
Yura: Now repeat.

Yura: Listen to the speaker say, It's mine., and then repeat.
Svetlana: это моё

Yura: To use a different phrase, replace mine with yours.
Svetlana: твоё
Yura: yours
Svetlana: (slow) твоё (regular) твоё
Yura: Listen to the phrase again, this time with yours
Svetlana: это твоё
Yura: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace mine. Say It's yours.

Svetlana: это твоё
Yura: To use a different phrase, replace yours with hers.

Yura: her
Svetlana: (slow) её (regular) её
Yura: Listen to the phrase again, this time with hers

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Russia, and someone asks you who something belongs to. You want to say It's mine.. Respond to the question.
Svetlana: это чьё? (five seconds) это моё
Yura: Now, you want to say it's It's yours. Respond to the question.
Svetlana: это чьё? (five seconds) это твоё
Yura: Now, you want to say it's It's hers. Answer the speaker's question.
Svetlana: это чьё? (five seconds) это её
Yura: Now, you want to say It's his .. Respond to the question.
Svetlana: это чьё? (five seconds) это его
Yura: Imagine that you find something, and you want to know who it belongs to. Ask the question

Not sure if I understood your question 😄


"ego" should be pronounced as "evo" - it is exception.


"мой" - mine (for masculine nouns)

"моя́" - mine (for feminine nouns)

"моё" - mine (for neuter nouns)

"мои́" - mine (for plural nouns)

I found the pronunciation of его baffling as well. Это странно!


я не думаю что видел это в классе?


Я понемаю очен слови "мой" "моя́" "моё" и "мои́". ЭТО НЕ УХЕ СТРАННО!

I have a question, is "его" pronounced as"yego", but why in the listening it sounds like "yevo"?
