Hello and welcome to Russian Survival Phrases. This course is designed to equip you with the language skills and knowledge to enable you to get the most out of your visit to Russia. So join us for Russian Survival phrases. You will be surprised at how far a little Russian will go.
In today's lesson we'll cover an extremely important phrase "Where is the bathroom?". In Russian "Where is the bathroom?" is “Izvinite, gde tualet?”. Let`s break it down by syllable: Iz-vi-ni-te, gde tu-a-let?. Now, let`s hear it once again: Izvinite, gde tualet?
Let's take a look at the components. The first word izvinite means "excuse me". Let`s break down this word and hear it one more time: iz-vi-ni-te and izvinite. This is followed by gde, which in English is "where", gde. So, to recap here we have: izvinite, gde. Literally this means: “excuse me, where is”. Let`s take a look at the next word: tualet which means "bathroom", tu-a-let and tualet. So altogether we have Izvinite, gde tualet?. Literally this means "Excuse me, where is the bathroom?".
Now when you finally get to the bathroom there may be one last hurdle. In some instances, only the Russian letters are written on the doors! What to do? Well, you can stop by the web-site and find the words for man and woman there. Find them inside the PDF or, if you have an Ipod, click the center button and you can find them there.
Quick tip number one. The word for "man" is mushchina. The word for "woman" is zhenshchina. Sometimes there is only one letter written on the bathroom door. If it is for male, the letter would be “M” for mushchina. For female it would be “Ж (Zh)” for zhenshchina. These letters are written in cyrillic, of course.
With the two first words of today`s lesson izvinite, gde you will be able to ask for quite a number of places or things. So, if you want to ask for a thing that you are looking for, you can put the name of that thing right after izvinite, gde. If you are looking for a luggage, for example, you can ask: “Izvinite, gde moy bagazh?”, “Excuse me, where is my luggage?”. If you are looking for a place you should add the word “nakhoditsa” , which means “is” after izvinite, gde. So altogether we will have: “Izvinite, gde nakhoditsa….” and then you put the place you are looking for. For example: “Izvinite, gde nakhoditsa gastinitsa?”, “Excuse me, where is the hotel?” . “Izvinite, gde mushskoy tualet?”, “Excuse me, where is the man`s room?”. “Izvinite, gde zhenskiy tualet?”, “Excuse me, where is the lady's room?”.
Ok, to close out today`s lesson we'd like for you to practice what we`d just learnt. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I`ll give you the answer. Udachi! That means “good luck”! Ok, here we go!
"Where is the bathroom?"……..“Izvinite, gde tualet?”
Alright, that's going to do for today. See you tomorrow, which in Russian is da zaftra!
