Привет Всем. С Вами Светлана. Hi everybody! I’m Svetlana.
Welcome to RussianPod101.com’s Русский язык за три минуты. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Russian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to ask the common question “Do you like?”. In this lesson we will learn how to ask questions using the question words “What?” “When?” “Where?” etc, in Russian. Of course there are others, but we will only touch on the more important ones. Are you ready? Let’s do it.
First of all, let me remind you that, unlike English questions, Russian questions don’t require any additional verbs like “Do/Does”, “Has/Have”, “Did”, “Will” etc. to build a question. All we have to pay attention to is the right question word and intonation. Other than that, the sentence basically stays the same as in regular declarative sentences.
Okay! Let’s start with the question word WHAT? It can be translated two different ways in Russian. The first and the most common is Что?
[slowly] Что?
Что это? is “What is this?”
Что ты делаешь? is “What are you doing?”
See? we don’t use any additional words like “Is” or “Are” in a Russian sentence. But if we omit the question word “What”, it becomes a normal declarative sentence.
The other common translation of the pronoun “What” in Russian is Какой? very similar to the English word “Which?”
“What day is it today?” is Какой сегодня день?
“What color do you like?” is Какой цвет тебе нравится?
Great! Our next word is “Who?”, which is Кто? in Russian.
Very simple. Just put the word Кто? in the place of the subject and say it with a bit of a questioning intonation.
Кто это? is “Who is it?”
Кто здесь? is “Who is here?”
Do you want to know when and where to meet your friends? Let’s learn how to ask those questions.
“When” in Russian is “Когда”.
Когда ты приедешь? is “When will you come?”
Когда твой день рождения? is “When is your birthday?”
Let me stop here for a while and break this sentence down because it’s likely that somebody will ask you when your birthday is. So, you already know the word “When”. Когда. Твой means “Yours” and “Birthday” in Russian is День рождения.
[slowly] День Рождения.
Altogether, it’s Когда твой день рождения?
[slowly] Когда твой день рождения?
Okay! great! The last question word I would like to introduce to you in this lesson is “Where?” Где? in Russian. Here’s an example question...
[slowly] Где ты живешь?
[Natural speed] Где ты живешь? means “Where are you living?” It looks much easier in Russian, than in English, right?
Let’s use our “you want” phrase from lesson 20 to ask, “Where do you want to meet?”
Где ты хочешь встретиться?
[slowly] Где ты хочешь встретиться?
Good job.
Great! We made it through this lesson.
Now it is time for Svetlana`s Tips
Ask as many questions as you can while you are learning. It is a great way to expand your vocabulary and practice some basic grammar that we`ve covered in our lessons. This is because in interrogative sentences, like in the regular statement sentences, we still need to modify the nouns, verbs and adjectives.
Well done everyone! In our next lesson we will learn Time-related adverbs such as “today”, “tomorrow” and “yesterday”. Do you want to learn them? If “Yes” see you in our next Русский язык за три минуты lesson! Пока Пока
