Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Муж: Помнишь, как мы с тобой познакомились?
Жена: Конечно. Ты наступил мне на ногу в автобусе, а потом назвал меня...
Муж: Ладно-ладно, не нужно говорить. Ну... а помнишь наше первое свидание?
Жена: Да. Ты пролил на меня горячий суп, а потом у тебя не хватило денег заплатить за ужин.

Жена: Это когда мы опоздали на самолёт, потому что ты забыл свой паспорт? Да, это было прекрасно.
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation with English translation.
Муж: Помнишь, как мы с тобой познакомились?

Husband: Ok ok, no need to say. But... remember our first date?
Жена: Да. Ты пролил на меня горячий суп, а потом у тебя не хватило денег заплатить за ужин.
Wife: Yes. You spilled hot soup on me, and then you didn't have enough money to pay for dinner.
Муж: Мда... Ну с медовым месяцем же у нас всё хорошо получилось.
Husband: Yeah... Well, but everything worked well with our honeymoon, right?
Жена: Это когда мы опоздали на самолёт, потому что ты забыл свой паспорт? Да, это было прекрасно.
Wife: You mean when we were late for our plane because you forgot your passport? Yes, it was wonderful.

Yura: And she remembers all of it so well
Svetlana: Well women have good memories, and besides Russians needed good memories because not every family had a camera
Yura: Really? What did people do to get pictures?
Svetlana: Well, they would invite a professional photographer who would take some pictures, but it was relatively expensive so people didn’t do it that often.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Svetlana: The first word is Познакомиться с.
Yura: This verb means “to know” “to get acquainted with” someone.
Svetlana: For example, ‘I was so nervous when I met my fiance’s parents.’ Я так нервничал, когда познакомился с родителями моей невесты.
Yura: The next word is ‘to step on’ someone or something.
Svetlana: That’s right, наступить. We usually use it with the preposition на and a noun in the accusative case. Я наступил на ногу моего друга.
Yura: I stepped on my friend’s foot. The next word is a romantic one-’a date’
Svetlana: свидание- the gender is neuter so ‘a romantic date’ will be
Yura: романтическое свидание
Svetlana: Good job! And ‘to go on a date’ will be- идти на свидание.
Yura: Where do you like to go on dates?
Svetlana: I like some place where you can talk, maybe a small restaurant or a quiet bar.
Yura: Sounds good, but I am always so nervous in places with food and drinks.
Svetlana: Why?
Yura: Well, I am always afraid of dropping or spilling something.
Svetlana: I am sure it doesn’t happen that often. But I’m glad that you mentioned the word spill-it is our next word- пролить-’spill’. And the husband in our dialogue spilled soup on his wife- Он пролил суп на его жену.
Yura: Great, the next word is Получиться. This verb can be translated as “work out” or happen and can be used in both positive and negative meanings. Once again we have an impersonal verb so it exists only in the third person.
Svetlana: The forms are Получится / Получилось / Получился / Получилась / Получились.
Yura: For example, a famous phrase of Chernomyrdin- a former prime-minister of Russia. We wanted to do the best but it worked out as usual.
Svetlana: Мы хотели сделать как лучше, но получилось как всегда.
Yura: All right, Now move on to grammar.

Lesson focus

Yura: In this lesson, we're going to learn more about verb conjugation in the Past Tense.
Svetlana: Sounds good to me.
Yura: As we already know, the past tense is formed with the suffix –л- and there are three forms of the verb.
Svetlana: Right, For the pronouns Я “I(english)” , ты “you” , он “he” , она “she”– we use two forms , for example, работал / and / работала depending on gender.
Yura: And for the pronouns мы “we”, вы “you”, они “they” - we use работали.
Svetlana: Great, in this lesson we are going to add one more pronoun оно, which means “it” in English, although not every verb has a form with it. Sometimes it doesn’t make any sense.
Yura: Right, like for example читало- ‘it read’- what can read besides humans?
Svetlana: Well, maybe we could use the word ‘device’-устройство. Устройство читало информацию. The device was reading the information. But you’re right, it is quite a specific and rare example.
Yura: I see, well, anyway, the pronoun “it” is used with the verb which ends –o
For example, работало.
Svetlana: yes, so we can have 4 forms of verbs in the past - for example, the verb ‘to work’ would be Работал / Работала / Работало / работали.
Yura: Let’s conjugate the verbs form this lesson in the past
Svetlana: Good idea. познакомиться
Yura: ‘to get to know’ -
Svetlana: познакомился, познакомилась, познакомились.
Yura: The verb in neuter doesn’t exist.
Svetlana: Наступить-to step- наступил, наступила, наступили The verb Наступило does exist but it will have a different meaning- ‘to come’ (like a season). For example, ‘Summer has come.’-Наступило лето.
Yura: Good to know. The next is Назвать- ’to call’- назвал, назвала, назвали
Svetlana: Right, Пролить- ’to spill’ - пролил, пролила, пролили
Yura: The next one is Опоздать- ‘to be late’ - опоздал, опоздала, опоздали.
Svetlana: And the last one is Получиться- ‘to result in’, ‘to turn out well’, ‘to succeed’ - получился, получилась, получилось, получились
Yura: for example, Всё отлично получилось. ‘Everything turned out well.’
Svetlana: or У меня получилось поступить в университет. I succeeded in entering the university.
Yura: And we are going to mention two verbs that have unusual conjugation in the past tense.
Svetlana: The verbs ‘to go’ - идти and ‘to eat’ - есть.The verb ‘to go’ would be Идти- шёл, шла, шли, шло. The verb ‘to eat’ would be Есть-ел, ела, ело, ели. And here are some examples with the verb in neuter gender. Всё шло по плану.
Yura: ‘Everything was going according to the plan.’
Svetlana: Странное существо ело рыбу.
Yura: ‘A strange creature was eating a fish.’ (laugh) What were you thinking about with this sentence!?
Svetlana: I just remembered Gollum from the lord of the rings.
Yura: I see (laugh). Well, he really was a strange creature.
Svetlana: As we have learned in the previous lessons, the verbs where infinitives end with –ти don't have the suffix –л- in the masculine singular form.
Yura: yes, we remember, for example, Нести-нёс-carry-’was carrying’ or ‘to take’- ‘he was taking’
Svetlana: Везти-вёз. There is an exception - the verb doesn’t end with the –ти, but doesn’t have the suffix either. Умереть-умер ‘to pass away’-’he passed away’
Yura: Okay, that’s all for this lesson.

Outro

Yura: Then see you next time.
Svetlana: пока пока
