INTRODUCTION
Yura: Привет всем, с Вами – RussianPod101.com, я – Yura.
Svetlana: А я – Svetlana, здравствуйте, welcome to lesson 22 of our intermediate series. Reminiscing in Russian
Yura: in this lesson we will learn about the declension of cardinal numbers
Svetlana: While talking about the things we miss
Yura: The conversation takes place on a bench in the park: and it is between Tanya and Semyon Petrovich
Svetlana: The speakers will use formal Russian because of a vast age difference
Yura: All right, let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation one time slowly.

Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation with English translation.
Семён Петрович: Я уже 20 лет живу в Англии, но до сих пор так скучаю по России...
Semyon Petrovich: I've been living in England for 20 years now, but I still miss Russia so much...
Таня: Да? А по чему именно?
Tanya: Really? And what exactly do you miss?
Семён Петрович: Сложно сказать. Иногда просто хочется нашей еды, нашей атмосферы, наших людей...
Semyon Petrovich: Hard to say. Sometimes you just want our food, our atmosphere, our people ...
Таня: Но в Англии же много русских магазинов, ресторанов, да и самих русских много.
Tanya: But in England, there are so many Russian stores, restaurants, and a lot of Russians themselves.
Семён Петрович: Да, но это всё не то... Здесь даже русские – уже не русские. Наверное, у меня просто ностальгия по самой России. Вам, молодёжи, не понять...
Semyon Petrovich: Yes, but it's not the same ... Here, even Russians are not Russians anymore. Perhaps I just have nostalgia for Russia itself. You, young people, wouldn't understand…
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: So this guy misses Russia.
Svetlana: Yes, this feeling is very common among numerous Russian immigrants in different countries.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Svetlana: The first word is cкучать. This verb can be translated as “miss” someone or something and is used with the preposition по and a noun in the dative case.
Yura: For example, ‘I miss my family very much.’
Svetlana: Я очень скучаю по моей семье. Yes, that’s true. One difficult example that sometimes even native speakers struggle with is ‘I miss you’ in plural. Many people would say я скучаю по вас. But the correct way is actually Я скучаю по вам.
Yura: All right, the next word is easy-атмосфера- ‘atmosphere.’
Svetlana: You are right, and the meaning is the same as in English. Let’s move to the next word.
Yura: Ok. It is very short-сам
Svetlana: Yes, and it means ‘myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, themselves.’ All in one word but with some changes according to the gender. Сам, сама, сами, само.
Yura: for example, ‘I will do it myself.’
Svetlana: я сделаю это сам. Ok, let’s move to the next word, which is ‘nostalgia’ - ностальгия.
Yura: That’s a beautiful word, a little sad though.
Svetlana: Oh well, what can you do if you miss the good old times? У меня ностальгия по детству.
Yura: I have nostalgia for my childhood. I have nostalgia for my home.
Svetlana: у тебя ностальгия по дому. I understand.
Yura: enough of nostalgia, we are young so we should think about what is ahead of us, not behind.
Svetlana: Ok, the next word is- youth- молодёжь. Do you know the declensions?
Yura: Sure, молодёжь, молодёжи, молодёжи, молодёжь, молодёжью, молодёжи.
Svetlana: Well done, and the last word is ‘to understand’ - понять. It is a perfective verb and usually is used in the past tense- понял, поняла, поняли. For example, я понял все значения слов.
Yura: I understood all the meanings of the words.
Svetlana: Did you?
Yura: Sure, I think our listeners did too. So let’s see what the grammar points are for this lesson.
Lesson focus
|
Yura: In this lesson, we're going to learn about how to decline cardinal numbers in Russian. Yes, even cardinal numbers change their forms according to the case of the noun.
Svetlana: Cardinal numbers don’t have gender forms except for ‘one’ and ‘two’ - один, одна, одно, два, две. We will learn the declensions of the numbers 1,2,37, because they represent the main types of declensions and then at a couple two-digit numbers - 25 and 40.
Yura: Ok, let’s start with Один час-‘one hour’
Svetlana:
Один час
Одного часа
Одному часу
Один час
Одним часом
Одном часе
Yura: The next one is Две девочки- ‘two girls’
Svetlana: Две девочки
Двух девочек
Двум девочкам
Двух девочек
Двумя девочками
Двух девочках
Yura: The next one is ‘three dogs’
Svetlana: Три собаки
Трёх собак
Трём собакам
Трёх собак
Тремя собаками
Трёх собаках
The number 4 would have similar declensions.
Yura: Ok, got it. The next one is ‘seven years’
Svetlana: Семь лет
Семи лет
Семи годам
Семь лет
Семью годами
Семи годах
The numbers 5, 6, 8, 9, 10-20, 30, 40 etc will have similar declensions.
Yura: In the case of two-digit numbers both of them change the forms according to the case.
Svetlana: That is correct.
Двадцать пять рублей-’twenty-five rubles’
Двадцати пяти рублей
Двадцати пяти рублям
Двадцать пять рублей
Двадцатью пятью рублями
Двадцати пяти рублях
Yura: And the last number 40, ‘forty books’
Svetlana: Сорок книг
Сорока книг
Сорока книгам
Сорок книг
Сорока книгами
Сорока книгах
Yura: As you can see, it is one of the easiest declensions because it has only two forms.
Svetlana: For example, у меня нет сорока трёх рублей!
Yura: I don’t have 43 rubles! I think I got it but I need more practice.
Svetlana: Good for you! Okay. That is it for this lesson.
Outro
|
Yura: Hope you enjoyed it. Then see you next time.
Svetlana: пока пока
