Гена Наконец-то у меня отпуск, не могу поверить.
Вера Ты куда-нибудь поедешь?
Гена Я мечтаю попутешествовать, а жена хочет поехать в горы.
Вера А дети куда хотят?
Гена Дети любят море. Но мы всё равно никуда не сможем поехать до следующей недели. У детей каникулы начинаются только с 25-го Мая.

Yura: Finally I am on vacation, I can't believe it.
Вера Ты куда-нибудь поедешь?
Yura: Will you go anywhere?
Гена Я мечтаю попутешествовать, а жена хочет поехать в горы.
Yura: I'm dreaming of travelling, but my wife wants to go to the mountains.
Вера А дети куда хотят?
Yura: Where do your kids want to go?
Гена Дети любят море. Но мы всё равно никуда не сможем поехать до следующей недели. У детей каникулы начинаются только с 25-го Мая.
Yura: The kids love the sea. But we can't go anywhere until next week anyway. The kids’ schools vacation only starts from May 25th.
Вера Иногда и дома отдохнуть неплохо.
Yura: Sometimes it's good to have some rest at home, too.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: Ahh, vacation, how sweet the sound…
Svetlana: Yes, I told you it was going to be a pleasant topic. So, Gena in the dialogue is on vacation and is dreaming about travelling.
Yura: I wonder where he would like to go.
Svetlana: well, he didn’t say but apparently it is not the mountains. I guess the beach- for Russians it can be a perfect destination- the beach, palm trees, fruit, sun...ahhhh
Yura: sounds like you could use some of Gena’s vacation.
Svetlana: well, I would not mind going someplace warm like Egypt or Thailand, which by the way is one of the most popular destinations among Russians.
Yura: oh yeah? Why?
Svetlana: well, there are beautiful beaches…and it is cheap.
Yura: I see, but it seems our Gena will not get to go anywhere, because his children are not on vacation.
Svetlana: you are right, so he will probably just take it easy at home, which is not bad at all.
Yura: Ok, then let's get to the vocabulary for this lesson!

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Svetlana: The first word is наконец which means ‘finally’. Наконец я закончил этот доклад!
Yura: ‘finally I finished this report!’ Great. What is the next word?
Svetlana: the next word is Отпуск. This noun is translated as “time off” and is used only to refer to the time off from work. Only adults can have отпуск, children have каникулы. For example, ‘I haven’t taken time off for 2 years.’ Я не была в отпуске два года.
Yura: ok, what did you say was the word for children’s vacation?
Svetlana: it is Каникулы. This noun is always plural.
Svetlana: The next word is поверить. It means ‘believe.’ it is used with the preposition в and a noun in accusative case.
For example, поверить в чудо-
Yura: ‘believe in miracles!’ great!
Svetlana: The next word is поехать and it means ‘to go.’
Yura: like go on a trip?
Svetlana: yes, поехать в путешествие.
Yura: yes, ‘it would be nice to travel a little…’
Svetlana: The next word is Всё равно.This adverb can be translated as ‘anyway’
Yura: For example, ‘We can’t go anyway.’
Svetlana: Мы всё равно не можем поехать. And the last word is никуда
Yura: which means ‘nowhere’ with a notion of direction. For example, ‘I am going nowhere.’ Or ‘I am not going anywhere.’
Svetlana: я никуда не поеду.
Yura: I guess this is it for this part of the lesson, but dear listeners, don’t go anywhere- никуда не уходите!
Svetlana: Except for to the grammar!

Lesson focus

Yura: In this lesson, we’re going to learn about Russian verbs.
Svetlana: Russian verbs are divided into perfective and imperfective verbs. Imperfective verbs denote lasting action, which has not been finished yet, or repeating action.
Yura: The action is performed at the moment of speech, so it is very similar to Present Progressive.
Svetlana: you are right, For example, Я читаю книгу.
Yura: can be translated as ‘I am reading a book.’ Or ‘I read a book.’
Svetlana: great, Я делаю домашнее задание.
Yura: ‘I am doing my homework.’ Or ‘I do my homework.’
Svetlana: There is only one present tense in Russian so the nuances of Present Simple and Present Progressive are expressed by the imperfective verbs. Next we have perfective verbs.
Yura: Perfective verbs denote finished (having come up to a definite limit) action.
Svetlana: The action is finished, ended. For example, Я прочитаю книгу.
Yura: ‘I will read a book.’ or ‘I will have read a book.’
Svetlana: Я сделаю домашнее задание.
Yura: ‘I will do my homework.’ Or ‘I will have done my homework.’
Svetlana: as you can probably see, the above conjugation seems to be in Present tense but it expresses the meaning in the Future.
Yura: wow, so we don’t need to remember all the conjugations in the present and future tense, we just need to remember the conjugation in the present?
Svetlana: that’s correct. But remember, you can’t form a sentence in the present tense with the perfective verb- the meaning always will be in the future. To form a sentence in the present tense you will need an imperfective verb, but we will get back to this grammar later.
Yura: ok, let’s take a look at some examples in the past tense.
Svetlana: Я прочитал книгу.
Yura: ‘I have read a book’ or ‘I read a book.’
Svetlana: Я сделал домашнее задание.
Yura: ‘I have done my homework’ or ‘I did my homework.’ So both Present Perfect and Past Simple are translated into Russian the same way and with the use of the perfective verb!
Svetlana: exactly! Very easy, no? We don’t need to remember all these forms you have in English- do-did-done. We just remember one- сделал
Yura: Brilliant! But we need to know perfective verbs and be able to spot or form them.
Svetlana: right, that is the tricky part. Perfective verbs are formed in different ways but in this lesson we are going to learn just one way- with the prefix по-
Yura: sound good to me, and then in the next lessons we can learn more about it, right?
Svetlana: right, so here are some perfective verbs in the prefix по-
Любить-полюбить (like)
Нравиться-понравиться (like)
Ехать-поехать (go)
Смотреть-посмотреть (look)
Yura: the verb is the same, you just add the prefix and that is it.
Svetlana: exactly, the exception is ‘to buy.’ Покупать- купить the imperfective verb is with the prefix по- and the imperfective is without. Я покупаю билеты в кино.
Yura: I am buying the tickets to the movies.
Svetlana: Я купил билеты в кино.
Yura: ‘I have bought the tickets to the movies.’
Svetlana: Okay, that's all for this lesson.
