INTRODUCTION
Svetlana: Привет всем!
Yura: Hi everyone, Yura here. Intermediate Season 1 , Lesson 10 - Getting Laid Off in Russia.
Svetlana: I'm Svetlana, всем привет!
Yura: Today we will continue the topic on career path.
Svetlana: Today's dialog might not be the most fun to hear, but I'm sure there are people out there who can relate to the problem our character has.
Yura: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use contrast transition.
Svetlana: This conversation takes place at Denis' house.
Yura: The conversation is between Denis and Katya.
Svetlana: The speakers are friends, so the conversation is informal.
Yura: Okay. Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Денис: Привет, я слышал, что тебя уволили, мне очень жаль...
Катя: Меня не уволили, а сократили из-за кризиса. Сейчас ищу новую работу.
Денис: Понятно, а в какой сфере?
Катя: В административной. У меня уже есть опыт, рекоммендации и неплохое резюме.
Денис: Ты хочешь работать на пол ставки или на целую?
Катя: На пол ставки, у меня же ещё учёба.

Катя: Спасибо!
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation with English translation.
Денис: Привет, я слышал, что тебя уволили, мне очень жаль...
Yura: Hi, I've heard that you were fired, I'm sorry ...
Катя: Меня не уволили, а сократили из-за кризиса. Сейчас ищу новую работу.
Yura: I was not fired, I was downsized because of the
crisis. Now I'm seeking a new job.
Денис: Понятно, а в какой сфере?
Yura: I see, and in what area?
Катя: В административной. У меня уже есть опыт,
рекоммендации и неплохое резюме.
Yura: In the administrative sphere. I already have experience, recommendations, and a good resume.
Денис: Ты хочешь работать на пол ставки или на целую?
Yura: Do you want to work part-time or full-time?
Катя: На пол ставки, у меня же ещё учёба.
Yura: Part-time, I still have my studies after all.
Денис: Я попробую тебе помочь. У моего дяди в компании есть вакансии и он нанимает новых сотрудников.
Yura: I'll try to help you. There are some vacancies in my uncle's company and he's hiring new workers.
Катя: Спасибо!
Yura: Thank you!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: Seems like no country could avoid the crisis and we have some folks that have suffered from it first hand. What does the job market look like in Russia today by the way?
Svetlana: Well, the unemployment has dropped compared to September 2008, it's about 6.5 - 7% now, and the job market is somewhat stable today. Plus there's a plan of creating about 60.000 job openings in the nearest future, which should also help.
Yura: So looks like Russia is recovering pretty fast from the recession.
Svetlana: It is. It still can't get the inflation under control, which is about 9.5% for now, and as soon as it's stabilized, the financial condition will make much improvement.
Yura: I've heard Russia has entered WTO this year, how do you think it will reflect on the economy in general?
Svetlana: It definitely opened up new opportunities for business and the economic growth will receive a boost by the end of 2011.
Yura: Ok, I think we are getting too economical here. Let's focus on the guy that lost his job. Do you think he has a chance of getting a job any time soon?
Svetlana: He has a friend who has connections! What else do you need in Russia? I think he's already gotten a job, so not to worry about that fellow.
Yura: Ok, let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Svetlana: The first word is уволить.
Yura: Not something you want to experience personally, but nevertheless, the word means “to fire,” “to let go.”
Svetlana: When specifying the person who’s being fired, you have to put it in the accusative case.
уволить Алексея – “to fire Aleksey”
уволить медсестру – “to fire a nurse”
Yura: Most often this word is used in the passive voice, like “He was fired.”
Svetlana: In that case the person being fired will still be in the accusative case, but put it at the beginning of the sentence.
Yura: Алексея уволили, медсестру уволили.
Svetlana: Great. Next we have the words рекомендация and резюме. Any explanations needed here?
Yura: Just that рекомендация is most often used in its plural form, рекомендации.
Svetlana: Now let’s see, is he looking for a part-time or a full-time position?
Yura: Part-time, cause he’s also in school. So he wants to work“на полставки.
Svetlana: Да, он хочет работать на полставки.
Yura: And if didn’t have his studies going on, he would seek a job на полную ставку, “full-time”. So again, работать на полставки means “to work part-time.”
Svetlana: And работать на полную ставку means “to work full-time.”
Yura: I guess we are done with the vocab. Sounds like a lot, but it’s really not that complicated. Now, let’s get to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Yura: In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to use a contrast transition. All we are going to do is go over one grammar structure and 3 words.
Svetlana: Let's start with the structure, which is "не..., а", "not... but".
Yura: This structure is very straightforward in its usage. It requires 2 parts of a sentence to be opposite in meaning, or contradict each other. It can be used in all tenses with any parts of speech.
Svetlana: Let's listen to some examples. Я не Миша, а Вова – I'm not Misha, I'm Vova
Yura: Here we used 2 nouns (names), and this is as simple as it can get. Next let's try to use it with places. They are also nouns, but require some Grammar Adjustment.
Svetlana: Он учится не в Москве, а в Киеве – he studies not in Moscow, but in Kiev
Yura: Remember the Case difference with locations and directions? When we talk about directions, we use the Accusative, like "в Москву, в Киев", and when we talk about locations, like in the dialog, we use the Prepositional – "в Москве, в Киеве"
Svetlana: Right. Now let's listen to the last example, where our structure is used with the verbs.
Yura: Она любит не читать, а смотреть телевизор – She likes not reading, but watching TV
Svetlana: Nothing difficult here, the verbs are in the dictionary form, so you don't have to modify absolutely anything.
Yura: Great, we are done with the first grammar point. Now, let's take a look at the word "из-за".
Svetlana: The meaning of Из-за is identical to the English “because of”, so is the context that it is used in. The only thing you should watch while dealing with Из-за is the Grammar Case of the words that follow it.
Yura: You would normally put nouns and pronouns after Из-за, they can also be accompanied by the adjectives. The thing to remember is, all those words should come in the Genitive Case.
Svetlana: We'll understand it better through examples, so let's listen to them.
Из-за плохой погоды – because of bad weather
Из-за ленивого сотрудника – because of a lazy coworker
Из-за маленьких детей – because of little kids
Svetlana: Now, let's listen to this word used with the pronouns in the Genitive. It will be a good review of the pronouns for you as well.
Из-за меня – because of me
из-за нас – because of us
из-за тебя – because of you
из-за вас – because of you (plural)
из-за него – because of him
из-за неё – because of her
из-за них – because of them
Svetlana: I think we should also touch upon the demonstrative pronouns, which are "this" or "that" types of pronouns.
Yura: Ok, here are a couple of examples.
Svetlana: Из-за этого – because of this
из-за того – because of that
Svetlana: Nice, I think those were all very useful phrases. Now let's take a look at the last 2 words we have for our today's grammar - Уже – already, and ещё – yet, or still.
Yura: Two opposite adverbs. Both these adverbs can be used with almost any part of speech – noun, adverb, verb etc.
