INTRODUCTION
Oxana: Всем приверт!
Eddie: Eddy here! Gangue Russian Season 1, Lesson 28 - “Taking the scenic route”. Now, no Russian vacation would be complete without a tour.
Oxana: Today’s lesson is a little break for everyone.
Eddie: A tour of glorious Moscow. But, there’s so much to see and do, we have choices.
Oxana: But before we do that, let’s review our last lesson, Lesson 27.
Eddie: Yes! In it, we learned about crossing the formal border in communication.
Oxana: [Давайте перейдём на ты.]
Eddie: Which is literally “Let’s switch to the informal “you”!” And means just “Let’s address each other informally.”
Oxana: Right! John and Elena have passed the introduction stage. It’s time for them to become closer friends.
Eddie: We also learned how to ask about the impressions a person got from something
Oxana: [Какие у тебя впечатления о…?]
Eddie: “What impressions have you got off?” And then just add a place or an event you’re asking the opinion about. And the last thing we’d like to remind you off is a grammar structure, the one you can use when wing and considering two opposite things.
Oxana: [С одной сторионы/с другой стороны.]
Eddie: Which literally means “from one side”, “from another side”, but can be translated into English as “on the one hand”, “on the other hand”.
Oxana: Of course we learned a great deal of other useful expressions, but we need to get moving further ahead, so listen to the next conversation and find out what John and Elena are up to next.
Eddie: Let’s listen to the conversation!

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Eddie: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Oxana: The first word we’ll look at is [Следующий].
Eddie: It’s a simple adjective meaning “next”. The word is strongly associated with hospitals from [unintelligible 01:12:44] some reason. But I hope you’ll only be hearing it in positive contexts. Next word is?
Oxana: Next is a phrase: [Добрый день!]. Let’s review all the greetings that we’ve learned. [Доброе утро]
Eddie: “Good morning!”
Oxana: [Добрый день!]
Eddie: “Good day!”
Oxana: [Добрый вечер!]
Eddie: “Good evening!”
Oxana: And [Здравствуйте!] and [Привет!], of course.
Eddie: “Hello!” and “Hi!”. All those first expressions have the adjective [добрый] in them. It literally means “kind”. So, kind day to the travel lady!
Oxana: Right! Next we have the word for the sightseeing tour, nothing much to remember here. [Экскурсия]
Eddie: Sounds like “excursion”.
Oxana: Exactly! There is a word for “a tour”, as well, and it sounds as [тур]. But we only use it to talk about trips to other cities and countries, usually organized by travel agencies.
Eddie: We also know the word for “travel”, remember? John used it when talking to the immigration officer, in the airport.
Oxana: [Путешествовать]
Eddie: Right! But there’s also a noun that can be made from this word. So, we have three different words for “travel”.
Oxana: [Путешествовать]
Eddie: “To travel”, but it’s never used in a sentence like “I travel to Russia.”, but only when you’re talking about several countries of origin like “I travel to Africa.” Second word is?
Oxana: [Тур]
Eddie: “A tour”, which is used to describe an organized planned trip to a different city or country. And the third word was?
Oxana: [Экскурсия]
Eddie: “An excursion”. The word which describes a short sightseeing tour around a city or a smaller place, like the Kremlin, for example.
Oxana: Yes, you can say [Экскурсия по Кремлю].
Eddie: “A tour of the Kremlin”
Oxana: Or [Экскурсия по городу].
Eddie: “An excursion around the city” . So, what kind of excursions did the ticket agent offered John?
Oxana: First, [Обзорная экскурсия].
Eddie: Which can be translated as “a general excursion”. [обзор] as a noun means “overview”, “a brief look at something”. It can also mean “review” if we talk about newspapers.
Oxana: Yes, and it’s rarely used as an adjective. But there is no other word we can describe a general sightseeing excursion but [обзорная].
Eddie: In a word, it’s a standard city tours, with the introduction to the main cultural and historical must sees. But what is [тематическая экскурсия]? “Thematic excursion”?
Oxana: [Тематические экскурсии] are for people interested in some particular aspects of the city. For example, a tour of the Orthodox Churches or Antic Museums and Markets, or the houses where some world known Russian writers some points lived. You can order such tour according to your interests. It might be a bit pricey, though, if it’s a private tour, but you can also choose from a list which is much cheaper.
Eddie: And what are the VIP Tours?
Oxana: Oh, these! Usually, they offer you some fancy car to ride in around the city, a personal young and cute guy which can speak different languages, time for a meal at a restaurant of your choice. That’s what usually business people order for their foreign partners.
Eddie: I guess John’s friend is not well off enough for such generous presents.
Oxana: Well, maybe John is not that important to him as a business partner in the first place.
Eddie: Who knows? The next phrase we learned was?
Oxana: [Первый раз]
Eddie: We’ve learned ordinal numbers before. Now, just remember the word [раз] which literally means “time” like in “one time”, “two times”. Oxana, why don’t we repeat the cardinal and ordinal numbers with the new word [раз] that we’ve just learned?
Oxana: Ok, here are some. [Один раз]
Eddie: “One time”, “once”
Oxana: [Первый раз]
Eddie: “First time”
Oxana: [Два раза]
Eddie: “Two times”, “twice”
Oxana: [Второй раз]
Eddie: “Second time”
Oxana: [Три раза]
Eddie: “Three times”
Oxana: [Третий раз]
Eddie: “Third time”
Oxana: [Четыре раза]
Eddie: “Four times”
Oxana: [Четвёртый раз]
Eddie: “Fourth time”
Oxana: [Пять раз]
Eddie: “Five times”
Oxana: [Пятый раз]
Eddie: “Fifth time”. Great! And next is something not all could be complete without. The [гид]. Needs little explanation? Just the Russian reading of the word “guide”. Let’s get right to our next words.
Oxana: [История и архитектура]
Eddie: How nice is that? The lesson is just full of words you don’t have to sweat on. The words that differ from their English equivalents only in pronunciation.
Oxana: But there’s one little thing I should mention about [история] - “history”. It has two meanings. First, the field of science, of course, the history in its primary sense. The second meaning is “story”, like in “scary story”, for example. But it’s never used in the meaning of the English “personal history”.
Eddie: The meaning “story”? That sounds interesting. Can we use it with our next word, [рассказать] - “to tell”?
Oxana: Of course, that’s how it was used in the dialogue, but in the dialogue it was used with the preposition [об] - “about”, and [история] and [архитектура] were used in the Prepositional Case. [об истории и архитектуре]. This is one’s histories meant as a science field. But, when you just say [расскажи мне эту историю] where [история] is used without any prepositions in the Accusative Case, it just means “Tell me the story.”
Eddie: I see! So, the case and the preposition change the meaning of this word.
Oxana: Pretty much!
Eddie: And the last word for today is [конечно], which is a simple adjective that means “of course”, “certainly”.

Lesson focus

Oxana: Ok. We have a couple grammar points for you.
Eddie: Not too much today and definitely not complicated.
Oxana: True, we’ll just talk about the word “if”. Remember the phrase from the dialogue, [Если вы первый в Москве, возьмите обзорную экскурсию.]?
Eddie: “If it’s your first time in Moscow take the standard excursion.” In this lesson we will only touch the real situation, nothing like “if I were”. So the conjunction [если] indicates the conditions that are required for the action to take place. For example…
Oxana: [Если хочешь.]
Eddie: If you want.
Oxana: [Если ты закончил.]
Eddie: If you finished.
Oxana: [Если будет скучно.]
Eddie: “If you get bored.” We can use any tense, present, past or future with [если]. It depends on the situation you’re talking about.
Oxana: And the second part of these conditional sentences can vary, just like in English, but today we’ll focus on the command words. Here are the examples. [Если хочешь, оставайся.]
Eddie: Stay if you want.
Oxana: [Если ты закончил, иди спать.]
Eddie: Go to bed if you finished.
Oxana: [Если будет скучно, позвони.]
Eddie: “Give me a call if you get bored.” In English, the condition itself, the part of the sentence used with “if”, is usually put at the end of a sentence like “Come if you want” not “if you want, come”. In Russian, the word order is very flexible so you can switch the two parts around with no changes in the meaning.
Oxana: [Оставайсе, если хочешь.]
Eddie: Stay if you want.
Oxana: [Иди спать, если ты закончил.]
Eddie: Go to bed if you finished.
Oxana: [Позвони если будет скучно.]
Eddie: “Give me a call if you get bored.” You can also use [если] with the negation particle [не] like in the following sentences.
Oxana: [Если ты не устал, оставайся ещ на час.]
Eddie: If you’re not tired, stay for another hour.
Oxana: [Если ты не сможешь прийти, позвони.]
Eddie: “If you can’t come, give me a call.” Ok, that was pretty clear and easy, just review the command words for that. There’s another thing we should mention here. The possessive pronoun “our”. In lesson 13, we learned the pronouns for “my, your, his” and “her” in singular number. Here they are again in masculine, feminine and neutral genders respectively.
Oxana: [Мой, моя, моё.]
Eddie: My.
Oxana: [Ваш, ваша, ваше.]
Eddie: Your (formal or plural).
Oxana: [Твой, твоя, твоё]
Eddie: Your (informal).
Oxana: [Его, его, его]
Eddie: His.
Oxana: [Её, её, её]
Eddie: “Her”. Now, slowly adding things to the knowledge we already have, welcome another possessive pronoun.
Oxana: [Наш]
Eddie: And that was just the form for the masculine nouns. What about feminine and neutral?
Oxana: [Наша] and [наше]. Here are some examples. [Наш дом]
Eddie: Our house.
Oxana: [Наша страна.]
Eddie: Our country.
Oxana: [Наше окно.]
Eddie: Our window.

Outro

Eddie: That just about does it for today! Oxana, I’d like to share a study tip a listener shared with us.
Oxana: You’re talking about the student who uses just the conversation tracks to review the lessons!
Eddie: Oxana, you read my mind! Yes, a listener of ours listens to each lesson several times.
Oxana: Then afterwards gets the conversation only track from our site.
Eddie:She then listens to them on shuffle, again and again, she created her own immersion program using Russianpod101.com.
Oxana:This is a great idea! Please give it a try and let us know what you think.
Eddie: Ok! [До свидания.]
Oxana: [До новых встреч. Пока!]
Eddie:[Пока!]
