Hi, everybody! (Vsem privet!) It’s me Katya. Welcome to RussianPod101.com. Today, our topic is 10 gift ideas you must know. Let’s begin! Давайте начнём (davayte nachnem!).
(Mama padarila mne notbuk na shesnatsatilitiye.) “Mom gave me a laptop for my 16th birthday.”
(Ty uzhe pridumal, shto padarish mame?) (Da, ya kupil yeyo lyubimyye dukhi.) “Do you already know what you'll give your mother? Yes, I bought her favorite perfume.”
3. книга (kniga) “a book”
(Nekataryye gavaryat, shto kniga - luchshyy padarak.) “Some say a book is the best present.”
(Brat fsegda mne pasylayet tsvety na moy den' Razhdeniya.) “My brother always sends me flowers on my birthday.”
5. фотоаппарат (fataaparat) “camera”
Don’t ask me why фотоаппарат (fataaparat) in Russian sounds so long when they are just camera.
(Byla by kruta, yesli by raditeli padarili mne novyy fataaparat.) “It would be great to get a new camera as a present from my parents.”
(Ya padarila mame smartfon f proshlam gadu, i teper' ana zabrasyvayet menya smaylikami!) “I gave my Mom a smartphone last year, and now she spams me with emojis!”
Now in Russian language, emojis or icons sound more like smiley. So we’re sending smileys to each other, you know, the smiley faces, smileys. So come on, send me a smiley.
(Moy syn abazhayet videaigry, paetamu ya khachu yemu kupit' igravuyu pristafku na den' Razhdeniya.) “My son is obsessed with video games, so I'd like to buy a game console for his birthday.”
(A teper' on prisylayet tebe sladasti. Gavaryu tebe, ty yemu nravishsya!) “And now he sends you sweets. Told you, he is after you!”
Come on. Here is my sweets! I’m telling you I’m after you. Here, chocolate! Cake! Here are some candies! I’m after you guys.
9. билет в Россию (bilet v Rasiyu) “a plane ticket to Russia”
(Ya znayu, shto ty uchish ruskiy, tak shto reshil, shto bilet v Rasiyu budet kharoshey ideyey.) “I know you are studying Russian, so I decided a plane ticket to Russia will be a good idea.”
(Atkrytka svaimi rukami - atlichnyy padarak!) “A greeting card made with your own hands will be a perfect gift!”
So when you say greeting card in Russian, it more has meaning of an open card, the card you’re opening. Usually, it’s close so you have to open and to read what the person is writing to you and the message the person has given to you. So we call it opening card.
