Becky: Welcome to 3-Minute Russian Season 1, Lesson 17 - Asking Why. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask why in Russian.

Becky: Here's the informal way to ask 'Why are you silent?' in Russian.
Elena: [Normal] Почему ты молчишь?(Pachemu ty malchish`?)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'why'
Elena: [Normal] почему [Slow] почему (pachemu)
Becky: Next is the word meaning 'you'
Elena: [Normal] ты [Slow] ты(ty)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'silent'
Elena: [Normal] молчишь [Slow] молчишь(malchish`)
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'Why are you silent?'
Elena: [Slow] Почему ты молчишь? [Normal] Почему ты молчишь?
Becky: Here's one possible answer, 'I am thinking. '
Elena: [Normal] Я думаю.(Ya dymayu.)
Becky: First is a word meaning 'I'
Elena: [Normal] я [Slow] я (ya)
Becky: Last is the word meaning 'am thinking'
Elena: [Normal] думаю [Slow] думаю(dumayu)
Becky: Listen again to the answer 'I am thinking. '

Becky: Last is the word meaning 'early'

Becky: Listen again to the informal question meaning 'Why do you leave so early?'

Becky: Here's a response meaning, 'I have a lot of things to do.'
