Question on Beginner Lesson 9 'только что'

Postby watsong » January 6th, 2010 1:01 pm

This lesson includes the example:

Я только что приехал в Москву.
"I've just arrived in Moscow."

Why include the word 'что' at all? The sentence means the same without it.

You are right, although "только что" is a much more popular expression in conversational Russian to indicate "have just". Besides, in many cases "только" itself (without "что") would mean "only, just this and nothing else". Compare these two examples:
Я только что обнял её - I`ve just hugged her.
Я только обнял её - I just hugged her (nothing else).
