Your business partner has already headed out to get coffee before going in to work and said he would meet you there. After he left, you realize that you really don’t know your way around Russia well enough to get to the office on time. Now you have to figure, out on your own, how to get there in a timely manner. You knock on your neighbor’s door in the Russian apartment you have rented. When someone answers the door, you reply in Russian, “Excuse me, I am going to work, but don’t know how to get there. Would you be able to give me directions to my new office?” The man is kind enough to help and asks you in Russian, “Where do you work, and what type of transportation are you going to take?” You know in Russia, the traffic is different, so you have no idea. You tell your Russian neighbor what office building you work in and then inquire in Russian, “What is the best transportation, and the fastest, to get me to work on time? Your neighbor replies in Russian, “I would go by train both ways.” He tells you how to get to the train and what stop to get off at. Incredibly grateful for your Russian neighbor’s help, you rush out the door and make it to work in plenty of time…in fact, your coffee wasn’t even cold.

Your community service consists of picking up litter along a major Russian highway. A friend has decided to join you seeing as he has lived in Russia for a long time and has recently realized that the Russian highways could use some picking up. As you are walking along the high-traffic Russian highway, your friend replies in Russian, “This is so annoying. People do not realize how harmful this is to our environment.” You agree and keep working. Another mile down the highway, you realize your friend has fallen behind. You holler at him in Russian, “Are you coming?” He quickens his step and rejoins you. A moment later, a truck speeds past you on the Russian highway, and the driver throws a bottle out of the window. It falls in front of you and your friend quickly looks at the license plate, memorizing the numbers. Quickly dialing numbers into his cell phone, he turns the plate number into the Russian state patrol, hoping this annoying litterbug will get a fine for his bad habit. After your friend’s good deed, you both agree that litterbugs, whether in Russia or elsewhere, are very annoying.

This was supposed to be the best vacation ever but so far, it has not been very good. You are hoping that when your friend that lives in Russia picks you up, things will calm down and you will enjoy yourself. You could go on. He begins to tell you in Russian how sorry he is that he added to your strife coming to Russia, when you feel a sharp jerk in the car. Someone just hit your friend’s car! You yell louder than anticipated in Russian, “When will it stop?” So far… NOT so good.

After being at work all day, dealing with excruciating pain in your mouth, you decide you had better take care of it and go to the dentist. You make an appointment for after work and the second it’s time to leave the office, you jet out of there and rush to the best Russian dentist you can find. While you are in the waiting room, there is a little boy and his mother that you cannot help but overhear because they are extremely loud. The little boy is misbehaving and running around the waiting room. His mother gets up from her chair and tries to grab the boy by his collar. He slips away from her and she replies in a stern Russian voice, “Do not run away from me. Come here now and behave yourself. You are making me mad.” She gives him a look that you remember your mom giving to you when you misbehaved. Obviously, the little boy knew this look too, because he sat down next to his mother and said in broken Russian, “I’m sorry, Mother. I won’t do it again.” The mother has a look of skepticism on her face, but you are grateful that the craziness in the waiting room has died down for the time. In the next moment or so, the Russian dentist’s office is quiet…until the little boy races to the other side of the room again. The receptionist comes out from behind closed doors and calls your name. Thank goodness it is your turn. Maybe now you can get some relief, from both this toothache and the other little pain…
