Learn Russian with RussianPod101.com. You are vacationing in Russia with a friend, taking everything in and going everywhere you can find in your brochure. In the middle of the city, there are lots of buildings, crosswalks, and people everywhere! Waiting at a crosswalk to cross the street, the sign will not turn green for you to go. You know if you don’t get across quickly, the Russian traffic will barrel toward you and you have no plans of getting hit by a car today! Your friend is mid-sentence when you quickly interrupt and scream in Russian, “Stop!” Your friend stops dead in his tracks in the middle of the busy Russian street! He asks you in Russian, “What? What’s wrong?” You pull him along saying in Russian, “Don’t stop!” Your friend, finally realizing the red light is lit up, replies quickly in Russian while running to the other side, “Why did you tell me to stop? Are you crazy?” You both make it to the other side, laughing both out of fright and because you are happy you actually made it! You tell him in Russian, “In a panic, I got my words confused. I meant to tell you to stop talking and get across the street, not to stop walking in the middle of the street!” You had better practice these confusing Russian pairs before you get someone killed!

To avoid confusion on Остановиться vs. Перестать I think of Перестать as “to quit” and so if one inadvertently used the word Перестать when the car stopped in front the of the house, perhaps it would mean the car motor quit working in front of the house.

You wouldn’t really say “перестать” about a car, unless you say “перестать работать”, to stop working. Again, not about a car, but maybe about some device or mechanism.
If you want to say that the car stopped because there was something wrong with the motor or for any other unknown to you reason, you say “машина заглохла” (mashina zaglokhla)
