INTRODUCTION
Svetlana: Привет! С вами RussianPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 25 - A Russian Story With a Happy Ending. Я Светлана.
Elena: А я Елена. Привет.
Svetlana: Congratulations everyone! You've reached the very last lesson of this series!
Elena: You did a great job handling not only new Russian words, phrases and grammar, but also the explanations that were 80% in Russian.
Svetlana: It was probably challenging, but remember “Тяжело в учении - легко в бою”.
Elena: True! No pain no gain!
Svetlana: Okay, In this lesson, you will learn about the usage of Ъ after some Russian prefixes.
Elena: And we will also listen to how Misha's business presentation went.
Svetlana: And how it turned out for Marina.
Elena: The conversation takes place in the office.
Svetlana: And is between Misha and Marina.
Elena: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Russian.
Svetlana: Let's listen to the conversation.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Elena: Почему?
Svetlana: Потому что это может навести неудачу. Так, в Китае подарок в виде часов - означает приглашение на похороны.
Elena: Правда? А я тебе хотела подарить золотые часы...
Svetlana: Ну я не дарю часы, а принять смогу. Ха-ха.
Elena: Okay let’s move on to the vocab.
KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Svetlana: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What is the first key phrase for this lesson?
Elena: взять на себя
Svetlana: “to take up”
Elena: “Взять” - глагол совершенного вида, однако он может заменяться глаголом несовершенного вида “Брать” “to take”, “Брать на себя”. Например “Никто не хотел брать на себя ответственность за неудавшийся бизнес проект”.
Svetlana: “Nobody wanted to take responsibility for the failed business project”. Okay, what's the next keyword?
Elena: a verb сглазить
Svetlana: to curse
Elena: Этот глагол используется в значении “отвести удачу от кого-то”.
Svetlana: Такое может случится, когда кто-то ругает кого-то или наоборот, очень сильно хвалит. Например.
Elena: “У меня в последнее время все идет не так, наверное меня сглазили”.
Svetlana: “Unlucky things have been happening recently. I think I've been cursed”. Okay what's the last keyword for this lesson and for this series?
Elena: a verb поспевать
Svetlana: to ripen”, “to color”, “to get ready” - when referring to fruits or vegetables.
Elena: Этот глагол в большинстве случаев используется в отношении фруктов и овощей.
Svetlana: В значении их созревания и готовности к употреблению. Например.
Elena: "После того, как на огороде поспеют овощи, мы начинает делать из них различные соленья на зиму.
Svetlana: “When vegetables ripen in the garden, we start making pickles to eat during winter time”. Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Svetlana: In this lesson we are going to learn how to write Ъ after prefixes.
Elena: It’s probably one of the most challenging letters in the Russian alphabet, along with Ь.
Svetlana: Right! They don't have sounds, but they are frequently used to make words sound correct.
Elena: Please compare “Семя” “seed” and “Семья” “family”
Svetlana: In the word “family”, we used Ь which makes seemingly similar words sound different. There are different reasons to use the letters Ъ and Ь in Russian. But in this lesson, we will just take a look at the letter Ъ used after prefixes.
Elena: In our dialog we have a word “Отъезд” meaning “departure”.
Svetlana: “Ъ” is used after the prefix ОT-.
Svetlana: “edible mushrooms”
Elena: “В магазине повесили объявление о распродаже товара”.
Svetlana: “There was a poster about a product sale in the store”.
Elena: Также Ъ пишется перед гласными Е, Е, Ю, Я в словах с приставками иноязычного происхождения, таких как аб-, интер-, контр-, суб-, транс-
Svetlana: Например. “Субъективный” “subjective”
Elena: “Трансъевропейский” “transeuropean”
Svetlana: Ъ знак также пишется в сложных словах после таких числительных, как двух-, трёх-, четырёх- и т.д.
Elena: Например “двухъярусный”
Svetlana: “double-decker”
Elena: И последний случай написания Ъ, который нужно просто запомнить.
Svetlana: Точно! Это слово “Изъян” “defect”
Elena: Например. “Мы обнаружили изъян на поверхности только что купленного холодильника и тут же вернули его в магазин”.
Svetlana: “We found a defect on the surface of the fridge we'd just bought, so we immediately returned it to the store”.
Elena: Great job! Thanks for your hard work, everyone!
Svetlana: We made it through this lesson, and through the entire series of RussianPod101.com’s Upper Intermediate Season 1!
Elena: We hope you enjoyed our dialogs and cultural insights.
Svetlana: And that you learned a lot of new vocabulary and grammar.

Outro

Svetlana: Okay, thanks for listening, everyone.
Elena: We hope to see you again in a new series. До встречи
Svetlana: Пока-пока
