Yura: Top 25 Russian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: Are you hungry? in Russian (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Russian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Are you hungry?" In Russian this is
Svetlana: ты голоден?
The first word in the question is
Svetlana: ты
Yura: "meaning you" in English.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) ты
Yura: Listen again and repeat.
Svetlana: ты
{Pause}
Yura: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Svetlana: голоден
Yura: meaning hungry .
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) голоден
Yura: Now repeat.
Svetlana: голоден

Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Svetlana: ты голоден

Yura: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace a little. Say Yes, I'm very hungry.

Yura: To expand on the pattern, replace very with not really.

Yura: not really

Yura: Listen to the phrase again, this time with not really

Yura: It mostly stays the same. Change yes to no, and replace the word for very. Say No, I'm not really hungry.

Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Russia and a someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer Yes, I'm a little hungry.. Respond to the question.

Yura: Now you want to say Yes, I'm very hungry. Respond to the question.
Svetlana: ты голоден? (five seconds) да, очень голоден
Yura: You want to say No, I'm not really hungry.. . Answer the speaker's question.
Svetlana: ты голоден? (five seconds) нет, не очень голоден
Yura: You want to say No, I'm not hungry at all. Respond to the question.
Svetlana: ты голоден? (five seconds) нет, совсем не голоден
Yura: You want to ask someone if they are hungry. Ask the question
