Yura: Top 25 Russian Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 16: How are you? in Russian (In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Russian learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.)
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How are you?" In Russian this is
Svetlana: как дела?
The first word in the question is
Svetlana: как
Yura: "meaning how" in English.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) как
Yura: Listen again and repeat.
Svetlana: как
{Pause}
Yura: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Svetlana: дела
Yura: meaning something like business .
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) дела
Yura: Now repeat.
Svetlana: дела

Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Svetlana: как дела
{pause}
Yura: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question How are you??
Svetlana: я - хорошо.
Yura: "I'm fine.. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Svetlana: (Slow) я - хорошо.

Yura: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Svetlana: я
Yura: meaning I.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) я
Yura: Now repeat
Svetlana: я

Yura: And next
Svetlana: хорошо
meaning fine/good.
Svetlana: (Slow, by syllable) хорошо
Yura: Now repeat.
Svetlana: хорошо

Yura: Listen to the speaker say, I'm fine., and then repeat.
Svetlana: я - хорошо.
{pause}
Yura: To use a different phrase, replace fine with great.
Svetlana: отлично
Yura: great
Svetlana: (slow) отлично (regular) отлично
Yura: Listen to the phrase again, this time with great
Svetlana: я - отлично.
Yura: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace fine. Say I'm great.

Svetlana: я - отлично.
Yura: To use a different phrase, replace great with normal.
Svetlana: нормально
Yura: normal
Svetlana: (slow) нормально (regular) нормально
Yura: Listen to the phrase again, this time with normal
Svetlana: я - нормально.
Yura: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the {lang} for great. Say I'm normal.

Yura: To use a different phrase, replace normal with so so .
Svetlana: так себе
Yura: so so

Yura: Imagine you are normal. . Answer the speaker's question.

Yura: You want to ask someone how they are doing. Ask the question

Yura: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.

Thank you for your questions.

The answers given in this lesson are simplified version to reply to "Kak dela?" question. To turn the question back, you just say:

А у вас? - A u vas? - And you? (plural, polite)

А у тебя? - A u tebya? - And you? (singular)

If you are not feeling well and want to say it, you can use the adverb плохо (plokho) which means "bad". The equivalent of English "so-so" is given in the lesson. It is так себе (tak sebe).
