Hello and welcome to Russian Survival Phrases. This course is designed to equip you with the language skills and knowledge to enable you to get the most out of your visit to Russia. So join us for Russian Survival phrases. You will be surprised at how far a little Russian will go.
There will be many times when the Russian around you, or coming at you, is fast and furious, and you may not catch all, or any of it. In instances like this asking the speaker to say it again can prove the difference between understanding a crucial piece of information or spending the rest of the day trying to figure out just what was said.
So that you can get a feel for the language and tune your ear, you should use the following phrase over and over! In Russian “once again, please” is "eshchyo ras, pazhalusta" .
Let`s break it down by syllable: e-shchyo ras, pa-zha-lus-ta. Now, let`s hear it once again: eshchyo ras, pazhalusta.
The first word "eshchyo" means "again". Let`s break down this word and hear it one more time: e-shchyo and eshchyo.
This is followed by "ras", which in English is "once", ras. So, to recap here we have: eshchyo ras. Literally this means “again, once”.
Let's take a look at the next word "pazhalusta", which means “please”: pa-zha-lus-ta and pazhalusta. So, altogether we have: "Eshchyo ras, pazhalusta". Literally this means “again, once, please”.
At times, even repetition of what is said isn't enough to understand the speaker, as the words are still too fast. For instances like this, you can use the phrase "Please, speak slowly” or “Slowly, please”. In Russian "Slowly, please” is "Pazhalusta, gavarite medlinna". Since we've just covered the first word “please” let`s break down by syllable the words that follow.
The second word is "gavarite" which means "speak". Let`s break down this word and hear it one more time: ga-va-ri-te and gavarite.
The third word is "medlinna" which means "slowly". Let`s break down this word and hear it one more time: med-lin-na and medlinna.
Another option is “Can you say it again?” which in Russian is "Paftarite, pazhalusta!". Let`s break it down by syllable: Paf-ta-ri-te, pa-zha-lu-sta!. Now, let`s hear it once again: Paftarite, pazhalusta!
The first word "paftarite" means "repeat". Let`s break down this word and hear it one more time: paf-ta-ri-te and paftarite.
This is followed by "pazhalusta", pa-zha-lu-sta and pazhalusta.
So to recap here, we have "Paftarite pazhalusta!". Literally this means "Repeat, please!"
This can be used together with "Slowly, please.” “Can you say it again slowly, please?” which is: "Vy mozhete paftarit' eta medlinna?". Literally it means " Can you repeat it slowly, please?"
Quick tip number 1. You can use the phrase from the previous lesson “Ya ni panimayu”, “I don't understand” and add today`s phrase Paftarite pazhalusta!. Together it would be: Ya ni panimayu. Paftarite pazhalusta! “I don't understand, repeat it, please.” If you want to ask someone to repeat their name, because you did not hear it well, you can ask them using this phrase “Ne magli by Vy paftarit` vashe imya?” which is “Could you, please, repeat your name?”, “Ne magli by Vy paftarit` vashe imya?”.
Ok, to close out today`s lesson we'd like for you to practice what we`d just learnt. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for saying it aloud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer. Udachi! That means “good luck”! Ok, here we go!
Once again, please……..eshchyo ras, pazhalusta
Please, speak slowly……….Pazhalusta, gavarite medlinna
Can you say it again?.......Paftarite pazhalusta!
Alright, that's going to do for today. See you tomorrow, which in Russian is da zaftra!
