Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody! Do you know how Russian people celebrate New Year's Day? In this lesson, you'll learn some important phrases about the Russian New Year and some valuable cultural tips.
In Russian, New Year's day is called...
Новый год
[slowly] Новый год
On Новый год, Russian people greet each other by saying С Новым годом!
(slow) С Новым годом!
This means "Happy New Year."
When you meet someone for the first time in the new year, be sure to greet them with this phrase.
There is a Russian proverb that you will hear often on New Year's Day.
Как встретишь Новый год, так его и проведёшь
(slow) Как встретишь Новый год, так его и проведёшь
It means "How you celebrate the New Year shows how the whole year will go.."
In Russia, it's believed that the merrier and more joyful the New Year’s Day celebration is, the luckier and happier the next year will be. That is why everyone in Russia tries to celebrate New Year’s Day with their nearest and dearest. Many people like celebrating New Year’s Day with friends at a restaurant, while others may like going to a ski resort.
On this special day, Russian people eat салат Оливье
(slow) салат Оливье
This means "Olivier salad."
Almost all households set up a festive New Year spread, which isn't complete unless it includes Olivier salad, referred to as "салат Оливье," and champagne. As the saying goes, the more lavish the New Year spread is, the more prosperous the coming year will be, which is why the table is laden with numerous delicacies.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the expression and repeat after me.

Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact!
How many times do you think New Year’s Eve is celebrated in Russia within a year?
In Russia, you'll hear nine different countdowns. Russia is the only country in the world where New Year’s Eve is celebrated nine times. Because of its huge expense, the territory of Russia includes nine time zones. The first ones to celebrate the New Year are the Кури́льские острова́ and Kamchatka, and the last one is Kaliningrad.
