INTRODUCTION
Yuriy: Привет! С вами RussianPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate, season 2, Lesson 5 - Where Can I Find This Famous Russian Cathedral? Я Юрий.
Elena: А я Елена. Привет.
Yuriy: In this lesson, you'll learn about the prepositions that govern the Genitive case.
Elena: The conversation takes place in the street.
Yuriy: The speakers are strangers, so they’ll be using formal Russian. Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Yuriy: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Бен: Простите вы не подскажите, как пройти к Покровскому собору? Боюсь, я заблудился...
Yuriy: I'm sorry, could you give me some hints on how to get to the Pokrovsky Cathedral? I'm afraid I got lost...
Незнакомка: Конечно подскажу. У вас под рукой есть листок бумаги и ручка? Я нарисую вам схему.
Yuriy: Sure. Do you have a piece of paper and a pen near at hand? I'll draw you a plan.
Бен: Да, вот.
Yuriy: Yes, here is it.
Незнакомка: Значит так. Мы находимся вот здесь. А вот тут - автобусная остановка. Пройдите мимо автобусной остановки и идите прямо.
Yuriy: So... We're here. And here is the bus stop. Walk past the bus stop and go straight.
Бен: Понял.
Yuriy: Ok, I understood.
Незнакомка: Через два дома вы увидите французский ресторан с деревянной террасой. У него большая черная вывеска с белыми буквами.
Yuriy: After two houses, you'll see a French restaurant with a wooden terrace. It has a large black signboard with white letters.
Бен: Ясно.
Yuriy: Ok.
Незнакомка: Около ресторана вы увидите круглую арку. Вам нужно пройти сквозь это арку. От арки примерно пять минут пешком. Только там сейчас идет служба.
Yuriy: Near the restaurant you'll see a round arch. You need to go through this arch. From the arch it's about five minutes on foot. But now there's a service.
Бен: А людей много?
Yuriy: Are there many people?
Незнакомка: Много, яблоку негде упасть. Даже свечку негде поставить. И большая очередь за святой водой.
Yuriy: Many, no room for an apple to fall. Even no place to put a candle. And there's a big line for the holy water.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuriy: Elena, do you often go to church?
Elena: I can't say that I visit church very often, but I at least try to attend services on the main church holidays like Christmas and Easter.
Yuriy: Does church play an important role in the lives of ordinary Russians?
Elena: It depends on the person, but nowadays more and more couples are also getting married in churches after their marriage has been officially registered by government authorities.
Yuriy: And do many parents have their babies baptized in a church?
Elena: I would say that happens in most families. By the way, have you ever heard of the cave monastery called Kiev Pechersk Lavra in Kiev in the Ukraine?
Yuriy: No, what’s that?
Elena: It’s definitely worth a visit. There are more than 80 surviving graves in this cave. Among them are the graves of famous people like Ilya Muromets, Nestor the Chronicler, and the doctor Agapit.
Yuriy: Ilya Muromets? Isn’t that a famous character from Russian folk stories?
Elena: It is!
Yuriy: So listeners, if you have a chance, please visit! For now, let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase in this lesson is…
Elena: “яблоку негде упасть” which can be translated into English as “there isn't enough room for an apple to fall”.
Yuriy: Let’s break this down.
Elena: The noun “яблоко” means “apple”, but in the Dative case. “Негде” means “there is no place” and “упасть” is translated into English as “to fall down”. So literally this phrase means “there is no place for an apple to fall down”.
Yuriy: This phrase means that a place is extremely overcrowded. But Elena, why an apple?
Elena: It’s said that the phrase probably appeared because of long observation of how apples fall down. Apples require a very small space for falling. And if even such a small object has no place to land, it means that all the space under the tree is full.
Yuriy: I see. Now I can imagine what “яблоку негде упасть” is. Let's give some examples.
Elena: - Много людей пришло на стадион на концерт? - Очень много. На стадионе яблоку негде было упасть.
Yuriy: - Did many people come to the stadium for the concert? - Very. There wasn't enough room for an apple to fall in the stadium.”
Elena: Людей в церкви очень много, яблоку негде упасть.
Yuriy: "There were too many people in church, no room for an apple to fall." Ok. The next key phrase is
Elena: “под рукой”, which is translated as “near at hand”, or “within reach”. The literal translation is “under the hand” where “under” is “под” and “hand” is “рука”.
Yuriy: This phrase expresses that something is very close or there is the possibility of making use of something or someone’s help at any time. For example...
Elena: - Аня, подскажи рецепт того вкусного шоколадного торта. - У меня сейчас нет рецепта под рукой, как найду, позвоню.
Yuriy: "- Anya, could you give me the recipe of that delicious chocolate cake. - I don't have the recipe right at hand, when I find it, I'll call you." For more examples and explanations please check the lesson notes. Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Yuriy: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use the prepositions governing the Genitive case.
Elena: The Genitive case is governed by plenty of prepositions, so we decided to divide them into several main groups.
Yuriy: The first group includes the so-called “prepositions of place”, in other words, the prepositions pointing out a certain place where something or someone is situated or an action takes place.
Elena: The main question of a noun in Genitive case will be “Where?” which is Где?.
Yuriy: These next prepositions are included in this group...
Elena: около
Yuriy: near, around, about
Elena: вокруг
Yuriy: around
Elena: недалеко от
Yuriy: not far away from
Elena: позади
Yuriy: behind
Elena: напротив
Yuriy: opposite, across
Elena: у
Yuriy: by, at
Elena: внутри
Yuriy: inside
Elena: возле
Yuriy: very close to, near
Elena: посреди
Yuriy: "in the middle of." Let’s give some examples.
Elena: Около моей школы находится огромный парк.
Yuriy: "There's a big park near my school." As you can see, the noun “школа” meaning "school," was used after the preposition “около” in the genitive case. “Около школ-ы”.
Elena: Недалеко от нашего дома произошло жуткое убийство.
Yuriy: "Not far from our house a terrible murder happened." The noun “дом” meaning "house," was put in the Genitive case - “дома”.
Elena: Земля вращается вокруг солнца.
Yuriy: "The earth revolves around the sun." I think this is clear now. The second group of prepositions governing the Genitive case includes “prepositions of movement”, which denote the way of movement. For example...
Elena: мимо
Yuriy: past
Elena: вдоль
Yuriy: along
Elena: до
Yuriy: "before, until, up to." Let’s give some sample sentences.
Elena: Я часто прохожу мимо этого магазина.
Yuriy: "I often go past this store."
Elena: Я не могу досмотреть фильм до конца, он очень скучный.
Yuriy: "I can't watch the movie until the end, it's very boring."
Elena: Люди гуляют вдоль набережной.
Yuriy: "People are walking along the seafront." The prepositions indicating the starting point of a movement are in the third group. Here they are...
Elena: от
Yuriy: away from, from
Elena: с or из
Yuriy: from out of
Elena: из-за
Yuriy: "from, because of." Here’s an example sentence.
Elena: Из-за пробок в городе я опоздал на поезд.
Yuriy: "Because of the traffic jams in the city, I was late for the train."
Elena: Корабль отплыл от берега.
Yuriy: "The ship sailed away from the shore."
