INTRODUCTION
Yuriy: Hello and welcome back to RussianPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate, season 2, lesson 3 - Are You Afraid of Flying in Russia? I’m Yuriy.
Elena: А я Елена. Привет. I’m Elena.
Yuriy: In this lesson, you'll learn about the preposition “на” governing the Prepositional case.
Elena: This conversation takes place in the airport and is between Nika and Misha.
Yuriy: The speakers are brother and sister, so they’ll be using informal Russian. Okay! Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Yuriy: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Миша: Скоро наша посадка на самолет. Ты как, переживаешь?
Yuriy: Soon we'll be boarding. Are you worried?
Ника: Конечно, ты же знаешь, как я боюсь летать на самолётах.
Yuriy: Of course, you know how afraid I am of flying.
Миша: Честно, я не понимаю, почему ты каждый раз так паникуешь. Самолет же самый безопасный вид транспорта. Об этом свидетельствует статистика.
Yuriy: Honestly, I don't understand why you're in such a panic every time. Planes are the safest means of transportation. Statistics show this.
Ника: Ну, это тебе море по колено. А у меня при малейшей турбулентности душа уходит в пятки и дрожат коленки.
Yuriy: Well, that's you who doesn't have a care in the world. But my knees are trembling and my soul goes into my heels from the smallest turbulence.
Миша: Не волнуйся, все будет хорошо. Пошли к нашему выходу на посадку.
Yuriy: Don't worry, everything will be okay. Let’s go to our boarding gate.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuriy: Elena, are you afraid of flying?
Elena: Well, you might be surprised to hear that it’s not just me! According to the statistics, 30% of Russians are afraid of planes.
Yuriy: I see, that must be why many of them buy a lot of alcohol in duty-free before boarding!
Elena: We joke, but Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport has opened a center that offers psychological assistance to passengers suffering from aerophobia. The center is called “Flying without fear”. It's the first specialist center in the territory of the former Soviet Union countries.
Yuriy: I hope it can really help those who suffer from aerophobia. Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word for this lesson is...
Elena: the verb “переживать” which can be translated as “to worry, to suffer, to pass through, to experience”. As you can see, it has many different meanings.
Yuriy: Ok, so let’s give examples for the first meaning - “to worry.”
Elena: Я переживаю по поводу экзамена.
Yuriy: I'm worried about the exam.
Elena: Он переживал за свою любимую футбольную команду.
Yuriy: "He was worried about his favorite football team." The second meaning of this world is “to go through some hard times, or some internal processes, to experience,” or “to survive” . For example...
Elena: Наша страна сейчас переживает не самые легкие времена.
Yuriy: Literally, “Our country is now going through not the easiest of times.”
Elena: Ветераны - это люди, которые пережили тяжелые времена войны.
Yuriy: "Veterans are people who survived the hard times of war." Ok, what's the next word for this lesson?
Elena: Next up is the phrase “море по колено” meaning “devil-may-care attitude, without a care in the world”.
Yuriy: The phrase consists of three words - the noun “море” which means “sea”, the preposition “по” which means “up to,” and the noun “колено” meaning “knee”. So, literally this phrase means “the sea is up to the knee”. We use it when we want to talk about a person who is extremely brave or adventurous, a person who isn't afraid of anything and thinks that everything in life can be solved easily.
Elena: In Russian, this idiomatic expression is often used with the noun “пьяный”, "drunk man," as “пьяному море по колено”.
Yuriy: Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Elena: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the main and most widely-used preposition in the Prepositional case, “на”, which can be translated as “on” or “at”. Yuriy, let’s explain to our listeners when we use the preposition “на”.
Yuriy: In Russian, the preposition “на” is used when you want to indicate that something is located on the surface of some object. For example...
Elena: Ты забыл свои ключи на столе.
Yuriy: "You forgot your keys on the table." You also use the preposition “на” with the four cardinal directions - north, south, east, and west. For example...
Elena: На юге Италии летом очень жарко.
Yuriy: "It's very hot in summer in the south of Italy." You use the preposition “на” when you talk about any kind of event, such as concerts, exhibitions, and weddings, or business events like meetings and conferences. In other words, it's used when you talk about some activity in which you or someone else takes part. For example...
Elena: Директора нет в кабинете. Он на совещании.
Yuriy: "The Director is not in the office. He's at the meeting." A meeting is a business event, an activity. It's logical that a director can't be “inside the meeting” or “inside the activity”. That's why the preposition “на” is used. What’s the next example?
Elena: Мы завтра идем на концерт.
Yuriy: "Tomorrow we're going to the concert."
Elena: Ты пойдешь на экскурсию по городу?
Yuriy: "Will you go on a city tour?" The preposition “на” is used with the words “ехать”/”поехать”, “летать” plus nouns denoting means of transportation.
Elena: Я езжу на работу на метро.
Yuriy: "I go to work by metro."
Elena: Я приехала в аэропорт на такси.
Yuriy: "I came to the airport by taxi.” Listeners, there are more very important rules about the usage of the preposition “на” in the lesson notes, so be sure to check them out.
