DIALOGUE

yuriy: I don`t think so. This is a new production and right on Friday there will be a premiere.
Ника: Отлично. А билеты ещё остались? Желательно по центру...
yuriy: Great! Are there still tickets left? If possible, in the center...
Персонал театра: Билеты разобрали в мгновение ока, так что осталось всего два места: в девятом ряду и в восемнадцатом.
yuriy: The tickets were bought up in the blink of an eye. There are only two places left: in the ninth row and in the eighteenth.
Ника: А с восемнадцатого ряда хорошо видно сцену и актеров?
yuriy:Can the stage and the actors be clearly seen from the eighteenth row?
Персонал театра: Да, неплохо.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase in this lesson is…
Elena: The idiomatic expression “в мгновение ока,” which can be translated into English as “in the blink of an eye.”
Yuriy: Let's break down this phrase to see the meaning of its parts. The pronoun “в” means “in” and the neuter noun “мгновение” means “moment” or “instant.” The neuter noun “око” is an old russian word meaning “eye.”
Elena: Translated literally, the phrase means “in the moment of an eye.” However, colloquially it means “very quickly,” “instantly,” or “so quickly that someone couldn’t even manage to blink.”
Yuriy: Can you give us some examples, Elena?
Elena: Sure! В мгновение ока машина скрылась за углом.
Yuriy: “In the blink of an eye the car disappeared around the corner.”
Elena: В мгновенье ока он стал любимым певцом страны.
Yuriy: “In the blink of an eye, he became a favourite singer of the country.” Ok. The next key word is….
Elena: “идти,” which has a lot of different meanings, but in our dialog it was used with the meaning of “to be on.”
Yuriy: It’s often used with such words as “пьеса” meaning “play”, “спектакль” meaning “performance”, or “фильм” meaning movie”. In other words, with words related to the theater, cinema, television and so on. For example...
Elena: В театре идёт новый спектакль.
Yuriy: “A new performance is on at the theater.”
Elena: Что сейчас идет в кинотеатре?
Yuriy: “What is on at the cinema now?” For more examples and explanations please check the lesson notes. Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Yuriy: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use ordinal numbers in Russian, along with their cases and uses.
Elena: As you may already know, there are two main types of numbers in Russian, ordinal and cardinal.
Yuriy: Like in English, ordinal numbers in Russian describe the position of an object, person or thing in the sequential order of the same, or similar, objects in a series, first, second, third and so on. Ordinal numbers answer the question “which?”,
Elena: Ordinal numbers should agree with the nouns they describe in case and gender.
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the ordinal numbers from 1 to 8. So, the word for “first” would be...
Elena: первый
Yuriy: second
Elena: второй
Yuriy: third
Elena: третий
Yuriy: fourth
Elena: четвёртый
Yuriy: fifth
Elena: пятый
Yuriy: sixth
Elena: шестой
Yuriy: seventh
Elena: седьмой
Yuriy: eighth
Elena: восьмой
Yuriy: Here’s an example of “eighth” in a sentence...
Elena: Это - восьмой ряд.
Yuriy: “This is the eighth row.” Another example...
Elena: второй дом
Yuriy: “the second house.” The creation of ordinal numbers above 9 is really very simple - you just need to add to the stem of the appropriate ending - [ый] for masculine, [ая] for feminine, [ое] for neuter and [ые] for plural. For example...
Elena: Let’s take the cardinal number ten - десять. All we need to do is remove [мягкий знак] and add the appropriate ending. So, десять minus [мягкий знак] will be “десят” plus, for example, the ending [ый]. This gives us десятый, meaning “tenth.” Or in the feminine - десятая.
Yuriy: Let’s take another cardinal number and see how it works.
Elena: Ok. So, how about “двенадцать,” twelve. It would be двенадцат - ый, двенадцат-ая.
Yuriy: Ordinal numbers in Russian are used to indicate all sorts of things, including hotel rooms, buses, TV channels, seats, pages, and more. They are also used to specify dates in schedules, biographies, and holidays. For example...
Elena: Он сидит в третьем ряду на девятом месте.
Yuriy: “He is sitting in the third row, ninth seat.”
Elena: Я жду тридцать второй автобус.
Yuriy: “I am waiting for bus number 32.” There are many more important rules about ordinal numbers outlined in the notes for this lesson, so be sure to check them out.

Outro

Yuriy: Well, that brings us to the end of this lesson!
Elena: Спасибо, что были с нами.
Yuriy: See you in the next lesson. Bye!
Elena: До скорой встречи!
