INTRODUCTION
Yuriy: Hello and welcome back to RussianPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate, Season 2, lesson 15 - Don’t Miss the Start of this Russian Movie! I’m Yuriy.
Elena: С вами Елена. Всем привет.
Yuriy: In this lesson, you’ll learn some very important rules about cardinal numbers.
Elena: The conversation takes place on the phone.
Yuriy: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Russian. Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Yuriy: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Вероника: Алло, Бен, ты где? Я тебя уже целый час жду.
Yuriy: Hello, Ben, where are you? I’ve been waiting for you for one hour already.
Бен: Ой, Вероника, прости. Кажется, я заблудился. Я где-то рядом с кинотеатром, но не могу его найти.
Yuriy: Oh, I'm sorry Veronica. I think I got lost. I'm somewhere near the cinema, but I can’t find it.
Вероника: Опиши, где ты сейчас находишься.
Yuriy: Describe where you are now.
Бен: Я стою между двумя высокими домами с красными крышами. Впереди какой-то торговый центр с большой парковкой.
Yuriy: I'm standing between two tall houses with red roofs. There is a shopping mall ahead with a large parking area.
Вероника: Иди к этому торговому центру. Кинотеатр находится на шестом этаже. Так, сейчас без десяти два. Фильм начинается ровно в два часа, так что поторопись. Тебе взять попкорн?
Yuriy: Go to the mall. The cinema is located on the sixth floor. It’s ten to two now. The film begins at two o'clock sharp, so hurry up. Do you want me to take (buy) you popcorn?
Бен: Да, возьми большой с карамелью.
Yuriy: Yeah, take (buy) a large one with caramel.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuriy: Elena, is going to the movie theater popular in Russia too?
Elena: Of course! There are many cinemas in most cities. Nowadays, there are usually cinemas in big shopping malls. And the ticket price isn’t all that expensive either, so anyone can afford it.
Yuriy: Are there any famous Russian film festivals?
Elena: Every year, Russia hosts one of the oldest film festivals in the world - the Moscow International Film Festival. As far as I know, only the Venice film festival is older.
Yuriy: Can ordinary people visit the festival?
Elena: Yes, you just have to buy a ticket in the cinema ticket office.
Yuriy: The Moscow International Film Festival even attracts world-famous celebrities.
Elena: That’s right. For example, Brad Pitt was at the 2013 festival.
Yuriy: Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word in this lesson is…
Elena: the adverb “ровно”, which can be translated into English as “sharp,” or “exactly,” when you’re talking about time.
Yuriy: Can you give us some examples, Elena?
Elena: : Мы пробыли в Токио ровно две недели.
Yuriy: “We stayed in Tokyo exactly two weeks.”
Elena: Я буду ждать тебя ровно в час дня.
Yuriy: “I'll be waiting for you at one p.m. sharp.” The adverb “ровно” derives from the adjective “ровный” meaning “straight,” “steady” and it is often used in such expressions as:
Elena: ровно дышать
Yuriy: “to breath calm”
Elena: провести линию ровно
Yuriy: “to make a straight line.” The next key word is...
Elena: the verb “взять”, which can be translated as “to take.” This is a perfective verb, so it only conjugates in the future and past tenses.
Yuriy: For example...
Elena: взять газету со стола
Yuriy: “to take a newspaper from the table”
Elena: взять автограф
Yuriy: “to take (receive) an autograph.” However, in our dialog, the verb “взять” means “to buy”. Can you give us another example Elena?
Elena: Ты в кафе? Я опоздаю на двадцать минут. Возьми мне пиццу с морепродуктами и кофе.
Yuriy: “Are you in a cafe? I will be twenty minutes late. Take me a pizza with seafood and coffee.” In this case, the verb “взять” again means “to buy,” or “to order.” It is an example of colloquial Russian. Okay, now on to the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Yuriy: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use cardinal numbers in Russian. Cardinal numbers can be divided into 3 main groups. The first group includes simple numbers, which consist of one word. The second group includes numbers that have one word but 2 roots, like 50.
Elena: Which is пятьдесят
Yuriy: And the last group includes compounds, which are formed from two or more words, such as 33 or 1981. In this lesson, we will introduce some very important rules. Here is the first rule.
Elena: The cardinal number “one” - один, should agree with a noun in gender, case and number.
Yuriy: One is the only cardinal number that has a plural form. For example...
Elena: один учебник
Yuriy: “One textbook.” The number один is masculine. The feminine form would be…
Elena: одна. For example: одна чашка
Yuriy: “One cup.” And neuter...
Elena: одно. For example: одно яйцо.
Yuriy: “one egg.” And plural?
Elena: одни ножницы
Yuriy: Which means “one pair of scissors.” Let’s review those once again.
Elena: один учебник, одна чашка, одно яйцо и одни ножницы.
Yuriy: The cardinal number “two” - два has two gender forms: one for both masculine and neuter - два and another one for feminine nouns - две.
Elena: So, два яблока and два дома.
Yuriy: “Two apples and two houses.” The noun “apple” is neuter and the noun “house” is masculine, but for both we use the same form for the cardinal number for “two”.
Elena: два яблока, два дома
Yuriy: An example of the feminine would be….
Elena: Две. Например, две кошки.
Yuriy: “two cats.” The other numbers don't have genders.
Elena: Alright, here is another very important rule.
Yuriy: If the numbers два - two, три - three, четыре - four are in the Nominative case or the Accusative case, then the nouns following them should be put in the Genitive singular form. In all other grammatical cases, the noun should be put in the same case as the number. For example...
Elena: Я купил две книги.
Yuriy: “I bought two books.” The word “book” was put in the Genitive case singular form, because the number is in the Accusative case.
Elena: Right. Книга, книги, две книги. However, take a look at this example - Я подошёл к двум девушкам.
Yuriy: “I walked up to the two girls.” Here the number is in the Dative case, so the noun is also in the Dative case. There are more important rules about the usage of the cardinal numbers in the lesson notes, so be sure to check them out.

Outro

Yuriy: Okay, and that brings us to the end of this lesson!
Elena: Спасибо, что были с нами.
Yuriy: See you in our next lesson. Bye everyone!
Elena: До скорой встречи!
