KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word in this lesson is…
Elena: глагол “планировать,” a verb meaning “to plan.”
Yuriy: This verb is used along with a noun in the Accusative case.
Elena: Right. “Планировать что?”, “to plan what?”
Yuriy: Elena, can you give us some examples?
Elena: Мы планируем купить дом в следующем году.
Yuriy: “We plan to buy a house next year.”
Elena: Что ты планируешь завтра делать?
Yuriy: “What are you planning to do tomorrow?”
Elena: Он планирует жениться лет в тридцать.
Yuriy: “He plans to marry around thirty years old.” This verb is also used in expressions like...
Elena: планировать здание
Yuriy: “To make a building plan.” Ok, what's next?
Elena: The next word for this lesson is the masculine noun “курорт,” which means “resort” or “health resort.”
Yuriy: Basically, a “курорт” is a place that has natural healing properties used for treatment and prevention of disease. But nowadays, the word is widely used to refer to a place for active rest, such as ski resorts.
Elena: Here’s an example Я планирую летом поехать на курорт.
Yuriy: “I plan to go to a resort in the summer.”
Elena: Артём уже приехал с курорта?
Yuriy: “Has Artyom already returned from the resort?” Great! Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Yuriy: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to form short adjectives in Russian. From our previous lessons you learned that all adjectives in Russian can be divided into two groups, qualitative adjectives and relational adjectives.
Elena: We’ve already learned that qualitative adjectives can be used to compare qualities of nouns.
Yuriy: In this lesson we will focus on another property of qualitative adjectives, the so-called “short form.”
Elena: First, let’s take a closer look at the formation of short adjectives.
Yuriy: To make the short form of a masculine qualitative adjective, you just need to drop the ending from the long form.
Elena: Let’s look at “красивый”, meaning “beautiful,” as an example. Here, we just need to drop the ending - “ый.” This gives us “красив.” Once again “красивый” becomes, “красив.” In another example, “здоровый,” meaning “healthy,” would become “здоров.”
Yuriy: To form the short form of a feminine qualitative adjective, we drop the ending from the long form and add the ending [-a]. For example...
Elena: “красивая,” meaning “beautiful,” would become “красива.” Similarly, “здоровая,” meaning “healthy,” would become “здорова.”
Yuriy: Finally, to form the short form of neuter qualitative adjectives we drop the ending from the long form and add the ending [-o].
Elena: Yuriy, Could you explain to the listeners when they should use the short form of adjectives?
Yuriy: Short adjectives are used to express a temporary property or state of the subject, whereas the long form denotes constant qualities or states associated with the subject. For example...
Elena: Этот человек больной.
Yuriy: “This man is ill.” This means that the man is chronically or always ill.
Elena: Этот человек болен.
Yuriy: “This man is ill.” Meaning that now, at this point in time, the man is ill.
Elena: Another example is “Мой начальник - очень занятой человек.”
Yuriy: “My boss is a very busy man.” This indicates the boss is constantly busy.
Elena: “Mой начальник сейчас занят.”
Yuriy: “My boss is busy now.” This indicates that the boss is busy, but only right now, in the present moment.
Elena: Let’s look at the next property of short form adjectives.
Yuriy: You use the short form when the given property of an object does not correspond to the needs of a certain person. Essentially, when something is too big or too small, too young or too old. For example...
Elena: “Эти туфли маленькие.”
Yuriy: “These shoes are small.” This means that the shoes are small in comparison to others.
Elena: “Эти туфли мне малы.”
Yuriy: “These shoes are too small for me.” This indicates that, even if the shoes themselves are big, they are too small for the person speaking. Okay listeners, for more information, please check the lesson notes. There are a lot of other examples, including endings and exceptions.

Outro

Yuriy: And that’s all for this lesson. Thanks for listening, and we’ll see you in the next lesson! До скорой встречи!
Elena: Пока -пока
