INTRODUCTION
Yuriy: Hello and welcome to RussianPod101.com. This is Lower Beginner season 1, lesson 25 - Visiting the Russian Airport. I’m Yuriy.
Elena: Привет, меня зовут Елена. Hello, and my name is Elena!
Yuriy: In this last lesson of the series, you'll learn about using the genitive case after adjectives describing color.
Elena: This conversation takes place at the airport.
Yuriy: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Russian.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuriy: Elena, are there a lot of airports in Moscow?
Elena: There are three main airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo International Airports.
Yuriy: Which is the largest one?
Elena: For passenger traffic, it’s Domodedovo Airport.
Yuriy: Are they far away from Moscow? We’ve talked about the awful traffic jams, so I’m wondering whether passengers will have trouble being on time for flights in the daytime.
Elena: Oh, you shouldn't worry about it. There's a non-stop Aeroexpress train to and from each airport. For Domodedovo, it takes approximately 40 minutes to get to the airport from Pavletskaya metro station—with no waiting in traffic jams.
Yuriy: I see. That's very useful information for travelers.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase for this lesson is...
Elena: …Счастливого пути! which can be translated as "Godspeed!," or "Have a nice trip." Yuriy, let's break this phrase down.
Yuriy: Ok. The adjective счастливого means "happy," and the masculine noun пути means “way.” So this phrase literally means "happy way."
Elena: You can hear this phrase at a railway station or airport.
Yuriy: Счастливого пути! is used when we see off relatives or friends on a long journey and want to wish them a good and safe trip.
Yuriy: For example...
Elena: - Всё, надо идти на посадку.
Yuriy: - Счастливого пути!
Elena: - "OK, I have to go for boarding."
Yuriy: - "Godspeed!" And another one...
Elena: Завтра я уезжаю в командировку!
Yuriy: - Счастливого пути!
Elena: - "Tomorrow I'm leaving on a business trip!"
Yuriy: - "Have a nice trip!" Ok, what's the next word for this lesson?
Elena: It's the masculine noun цвет, which can be translated into English as “color.”
Yuriy: This word has direct and indirect meanings. The direct meaning is “color.” For example...
Elena: Какого цвета флаг вашей страны?
Yuriy: "What color is the flag of your country?" And the indirect meaning of this noun is “the best part of...” For example, "the best part of youth," or "the best part of the nation," and so on. For instance...
Elena: Эти спортсмены - цвет нации!
Yuriy: "These athletes are the cream of the nation!" Another example please.
Elena: Эти люди - цвет нашего общества!
Yuriy: "These people are the cream of our society!" Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Yuriy: In this lesson, you’ll learn about the use of the genitive case after adjectives describing color, as well as about the grammar structure using the words “that's why” and “because.” Here is the rule. If you respond to the question “What color is it?,” the color should be put in masculine singular genitive form.
Elena: Can you tell the listeners why?
Yuriy: Because in this case, the adjective refers to the noun цвет, or "color," which is of masculine gender. For example...
Elena: -Какого цвета твоя машина? - Красного.
Yuriy: - "What color is your car?" - "Red." However, there is one more rule.
Elena: And what's that?
Yuriy: If you want to answer the question starting with “It is…,” then the color should be put in nominative case, and it should correspond to the gender and number of the noun. For example...
Elena: Какого цвета твой мотоцикл? - Он чёрный.
Yuriy: - "What color is your bike?" - "It's black."
Elena: In this sentence, the adjective for “black” took the masculine singular nominative form, because it refers to the word “bike”
Yuriy: Elena, let’s compare the two grammar structures.
Elena: - Какого цвета твой велосипед? - Голубого.
Yuriy: - "What color is your bicycle?" - "Light blue."
Elena: And here's the other one... -Какого цвета твое платье? - Оно голубое.
Yuriy: - "What color is your dress?" - "It's light blue." Another grammar point for this lesson is the difference between the words поэтому, meaning "that's why" and потому что, meaning "because."
Elena: The word потому что, or "because," states a reason. Whereas the word поэтому, or "that's why," points out the consequence or the result. For example...
Elena: Я знаю русский язык, потому что я жил в Москве.
Yuriy: “I know Russian, because I lived in Moscow.”
Elena: As you can see, in this sentence the words потому что я жил в Москве, or "because I lived in Moscow," describe the reason why I know Russian.
Yuriy: Now let's compare this with another sentence.
Elena: Я жил в Москве, поэтому я знаю русский язык.
Yuriy: "I lived in Moscow, that's why I know Russian."
Elena: In this sentence, the words поэтому я знаю русский язык, or "that's why I know Russian" point out a result of my living in Russia.
Yuriy: OK, I think we’ve got it. Listeners, remember you can always check the lesson notes to reinforce what you’ve learned in this lesson. Well, that's all the time we have for this lesson and for this series. We hope you enjoyed it and found it useful.

Outro

Elena: Thanks for listening everyone. До скорого встречи!
Yuriy: Bye!
