Привет Всем. С Вами Светлана. Hi everybody! I’m Svetlana.
Welcome to RussianPod101.com’s Русский язык за три минуты. The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn Russian.
In the last lesson, we learned how to use the phrases “I want” and “I love”, so now you can say that you want to eat, if you are hungry as well as what you like eating. In this lesson we will learn how to talk about what you like. Are you ready? Lets Go!
Let’s first find out if the verb “like”, “нравится” in Russian, needs to be changed or not. Good news! It doesn’t change. The only thing that changes is the pronoun. We should put it in “dative” case.
Lets review them.
Мне, Тебе, Вам, Нам, Ему, Ей, Им
Мне нравится - “I like”
Тебе нравится - “You like”
Вам нравится - “You (plural) like”
Нам нравится - “We like”
Ему нравится - “He likes”
Ей нравится - “She likes”
Им нравится - “They like”
Beautiful! Very easy, isn’t it?
Let’s now build the sentence. Let’s say “I like the Russian language”
Мне нравится Русский Язык.
[slowly] Мне нравится Русский Язык.
“Now, let’s say I like studying the Russian language.”
Мне нравится изучать Русский язык.
[slowly] Мне нравится изучать Русский язык.
Does the sentence structure look familiar? It should! We put the noun which comes after the phrase “I like” in the dative case and leave the verb as it is, in its dictionary form.
Let’s practice some more by saying “He likes traveling” - “Ему нравится путешествовать”
“She likes McDonalds” - Ей нравится МакДональдс.
Now, let’s try to ask a “YES” or “NO” Question about what someone likes or does not like. This is very easy in Russian, because all we need to change is intonation.
Тебе нравится Русский Язык? This means “Do you like the Russian language?”
The answer will be simple. You just repeat the sentence, except for the personal pronoun, of course.
Да, which is “Yes” in English and then the rest of the sentence – Мне нравится Русский Язык.
Altogether:
Да мне нравиться Русский язык.
To build a negative sentence, you just add “HE” before the verb “Нравиться”, and say “Не Нравится”.
Мне не нравиться Русский Язык.
But, I hope you DO like it!
Now it is time for Svetlana’s tips.
In our last lesson we learned a very sweet phrase using the verb “love”, remember?
Я люблю тебя. “I love you.”
Guess what? You can also express your feelings using the phrase we’ve learned in this lesson. It is less impulsive, but very sweet.
Say Ты мне нравишься. The literal translation is “you are likable to me”. It sounds a bit cold hearted in English but it is very sweet in Russian. By using this phrase you can show that you are drawn to somebody or want to declare your feeling of love.
So please say it to your loved ones!
In our next few lessons we will learn how to use interrogatives to build questions in Russian. It will make your language even more rich and vivid. See you in our next Russian in Three minutes video series.
