INTRODUCTION
Svetlana: Привет всем!
Yura: С вами – Yura ! Intermediate Season 1 , Lesson 6 - On the Move in Russia.
Svetlana: I'm Svetlana, всем привет, and we are continuing our selling-buying theme.
Yura: But today is a little special as you will be the one to sell. We are not in a store anymore.
Svetlana: Right. In this lesson, you'll learn how to sell your own things. This conversation takes place in the dormitory.
Yura: The conversation is between a Russian and a foreign student.
Svetlana: The speakers are friends, therefore the speakers will be speaking informal Russian.
Yura: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation one time slowly.

Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation with English translation.
Катя: Я видела объявление о продаже велосипеда с твоим номером телефона сегодня. Зачем ты его продаёшь?
Yura: I saw an ad for a bicycle sale with your phone number on it today. Why are you selling it?
Джон: Я скоро уезжаю, поэтому я хочу продать некоторые вещи перед отъездом.
Yura: I'm leaving soon, so I want to sell some things before I go.
Катя: А что ещё ты хочешь продать?
Yura: What else do you want to sell?
Джон: Микроволновую печь, холодильник, посуду, пылесос...
Yura: Microwave oven, refrigerator, china, vacuum cleaner...
Катя: В моём общежитии перед входом тоже есть доска объявлений. Хочешь, повесим твоё объявление там тоже?
Yura: In front of the entrance to my dorm, there is also a bulletin board. If you want, we can put your ad there, too.
Джон: Конечно, спасибо! А ты не хочешь у меня что-нибудь купить? Отдам очень дёшево! Yura: Of course, thank you! And don't you want to buy anything from me? I'll give it to you for very cheap!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: So, to sell something in Russia you give an ad, right?
Svetlana: Yes, but posting it in a newspaper is probably not the best idea. People don't usually buy personal things through newspapers. But there are other options.
Yura: Yeah, I've seen people even stick their ads on electric poles and building walls.
Svetlana: They are not really supposed to do it, but yea, you can see a lot of those. The best thing is to sell through people that you know of course, just asking around.
Yura: But there are also special ad boards you can stick it on. If you live in a dorm, there are definitely some there.
Svetlana: Even in simple apartment buildings there are sometimes such boards.
Yura: Why don't people do it through newspapers or web-sites?
Svetlana: Hard to say. They just prefer an old and familiar way of dealing with such things. Newspapers are not often trusted, and Internet is not affordable to people who buys used items. It's really hard to say why, but my advice – just ask around, your friends, roommates, coworkers... There will always be people willing to buy something from you.
Yura: Ok, thanks! Now let's get to the vocabulary part of our lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Svetlana: The first word is объявление.
Yura: Which means “an advertisement,” “a notice,” “an announcement.”
Svetlana: It can mean both a written ad and a vocal announcement, like in airports.
Yura: Right. So you can write an объявление, or you can call out an объявление.
Svetlana: The next word is продажа, which means “selling,” “realization,” or just “sale.”
Yura: But “sale” in this case doesn’t imply any discounts; it’s the act of selling itself.
Svetlana: The next word is отъезд, which is also pretty straightforward and means “departure,” “leaving.” What would be the opposite of that?
Yura: Приезд (“arrival”). The difference is just in the prefixes – от- for departure and при- for arrival.
Svetlana: Next we have посуда. This word is very general and used for all kitchen utensils. It can be china, simple dishes, silverware, pots and pans… Anything you eat from and with.
Yura: We usually say помыть посуду, which means “to do the dishes.”
Svetlana: Next we have a word is пылесос.
Yura: It means “vacuum cleaner,” but literally it means “the one that sucks dust.” Well, that’s what it does, right?
Svetlana: Yeah, it’s just funny that the names are so plain. Logical, though.
Yura: Ok, now let’s get to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Yura: In this lesson, we’re going to learn how to use the instrumental case.
Svetlana: In the previous lessons we reviewed the Genitive and Accusative Cases. Were you able to identify them in the dialog?
Yura: Let's see. The nouns in the accusative case were used in the following phrases - продать некоторые вещи...
Svetlana: Вещи are used in the Accusative Case
Yura: Right. Then, продать микроволновую печь, холодильник, посуду, пылесос
Svetlana: All those items are in the Accusative
Yura: Yes, and in the phrase повесить объявление
Svetlana: Объявление is also used in the Accusative. What about the Genitive Case? What phrases had the nouns in the Genitive?
Yura: There were a couple. For example, продаже велосипеда – sale of a bicycle (a bicycle sale)
Svetlana: велосипед is used in the Genitive
Yura: And доска объявлений – a board of ads (an ad board)
Svetlana: where объявление is used in the Genitive.
Yura: Ok, those we are clear about. Now, we've also come across some phrases in the Instrumental Case, which we'll talk a little more about now.
Svetlana: So, there are 3 main situations where we normally use Instrumental Case. First, we use it when we talk about how things are done and translate it into English with the prepositions "by" or "with".
Yura: For example, [Russian - Svetlana / English- Yura]
ехать автобусом – to go by bus
есть ножом и вилкой – to eat with knife and fork
Svetlana: Right. Second, Instrumental Case comes in handy when we talk about togetherness and use the preposition "c", "with" [Russian - Svetlana / English- Yura]
я с другом – my friend and I (lit. I with my friend) чай с сахаром – tea with sugar
Svetlana: And the third common case when we use Instrumental is when we use following prepositions [Russian - Svetlana / English- Yura] "c" – "with", "над" – "above", "под – under", "между" – "between", "перед" – "in front of" and "за" – behind"
Svetlana: So, those were the most common 3 cases in which we would use the nouns in the Instrumental. I believe we have the phrases with the instrumental case in the dialog as well, don't we.
Yura: We sure do. Here they are – [Russian - Svetlana / English- Yura]
с номером телефона - with a phone number
перед отъездом – before departure
перед входом – in front of the entrance
Svetlana: Great, we have plenty. The phrase "с номером телефона" is actually pretty interesting because it combines 2 grammar cases in it – Instrumental and Genitive.
Yura: True. The word "номером" comes from the word "номер" and is put into the Instrumental because it goes after the preposition "c". So "номер" becomes "номером". But the word "телефона" (originally телефон) is Genitive because it falls under the rules of the "of" Case – "the number of the phone".
Svetlana: Right. And the nouns in the other 2 phrases, "перед отъездом" and "перед входом" are Instrumental because we have the preposition "перед" before them.
Yura: Yes. So, we reviewed the situations in which we apply the rules of the Instrumental grammar case. But do you remember how to form the nouns in this case?
Svetlana: Yes. Most masculine nouns change their endings into "ом". And most feminine nouns change their endings into "ой". right?
Yura: That’s right. We hope it was a good review of the Instrumental Case for you!
Svetlana: That just about does it for today.
