Lesson Transcript

Hi everyone! I’m Alisha.
Welcome to Conversational Phrases!
We’ve found that the best way to learn a language is to speak it from day one! And the best way to start speaking is to learn phrases that you’ll use in real conversations.
In this lesson, you’ll learn conversational phrases to ask and answer the question, "How do you say this?" After watching this video, you’ll be able to ask someone how a word is pronounced.
Now, let’s take a look at some conversational phrases!
Listen to the dialogue.
Как это называется? (Kak eto nazyvayetsya?)
Это называется "парковка". (Eto nazyvayetsya "parkovka".)
Once more with the English translation.
Как это называется? (Kak eto nazyvayetsya?)
“How do you say this?”
Это называется "парковка". (Eto nazyvayetsya "parkovka".)
"It's 'parking lot.'”
First of all you'll need to learn how to say “How do you say this?”
That's:
Как это называется? (Kak eto nazyvayetsya?)
Listen to it again:
Как это называется?, Как это называется? (Kak eto nazyvayetsya?, Kak eto nazyvayetsya?)
This Russian sentence means something like " How is it named? ” But it means “How do you say this?”
Now, how do you answer this question?
The pattern is:
Это называется [ ]. (Eto nazyvayetsya [ ].)
This Russian sentence literally translates into "It [word].” But it means “It's (word).”
For example:
"It's 'parking lot.'”
Это называется "парковка"., Это называется "парковка". (Eto nazyvayetsya "parkovka"., Eto nazyvayetsya "parkovka".)

Hello James,

thank you for your question!

I think this question is ok if you want to know how to pronounce a Russian word ("Как ты это говоришь" or "Как ты это произносишь?")

But if you want to find out a name of something in Russian and sound like Russian, it's better to ask "Как это называется?" or "Как сказать ... по-русски?".

Kind Regards,

Evgeniia

Hello Patrick,

thank you for your question!

Yes, you can ask "Как это называется?" as well. Although I think there is a slight difference.

For example, you can ask "Как это называется?" when you see something absolutely new to you, a Russian dish for example. You will not know its name in English and will ask "Как это называется?" instead of "Как сказать ... по-русски?".

Kind Regards,
