INTRODUCTION
Eddie: Eddie here. Beginner Series Season 2, Lesson 11 - Next week, for sure. Hello and welcome back to RussianPod101.com, the fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Russian. I'm joined in the studio by…
Oksana: Oksana here.
Eddie: We’re back with our unlucky friend, Kevin, and his airport adventures.
Oksana: Let’s listen to the conversation and find out what happened to him today and how he can deal with the problems Russia causes him.
Eddie: Yes, it’s not always a honeymoon when you’re traveling on your own with minimum knowledge of the language of the country you’re in.
Oksana: Well, let’s expand this minimum so none of our listeners are afraid of Russian realities. Here it is.
Eddie: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Oksana: [Ваш багаж по ошибке улетел в Гонконг.]
Eddie: [И когда я могу получить его?]
Oksana: [Может быть, завтра или послезавтра. На следующей неделе точно.]
Eddie: [Но там вся моя одежда!]
Eddie: Once again, slowly.
Oksana: [Еще раз,медленнее. Ваш багаж по ошибке улетел в Гонконг.]
Eddie: [И когда я могу получить его?]
Oksana: [Может быть, завтра или послезавтра. На следующей неделе точно.]
Eddie: [Но там вся моя одежда! ]
Eddie: At native speed, with the translation.
Oksana: Еще раз,с переводом. Ваш багаж по ошибке улетел в Гонконг.
Eddie: Your baggage has gone to Hong Kong by mistake.
Oksana: И когда я могу получиь его?
Eddie: So when can I get it?
Oksana: Может быть, завтра или послезавтра. На следующей неделе точно.
Eddie: Maybe tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Next week for sure.
Oksana: Но там вся моя одежда!
Eddie: But that’s all my clothes.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eddie: Have you ever been in such a situation, Oksana?
Oksana: Actually, I have and I think I’ve mentioned it in one of the lessons. When I went to Japan with my parents, the bag with all our shoes went to America, by mistake. Fortunately, my English saved us that time, but if it happened in Russia, I’d be lucky to be Russian, I guess, because you can rarely find English speaking staff there.
Eddie: And even if you’re Russian, your chances of getting your luggage back are way lower than in Japan, no matter how good your Russian, is, right?
Oksana: Well, I would say yes if I knew it wouldn’t scare away our learners from traveling. Don’t worry, everyone, everything should be fine.
Eddie: Anyway, let’s hope Kevin gets his bag back, although it might take him his entire time in Russia to wait for a bag coming from Hong Kong. Meanwhile, let’s listen to the vocabulary for this lesson.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eddie: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word we’ll look at is…
Oksana: [По ошибке] which means “by mistake”. And the word “mistake” itself is [ошибка].
Eddie: Have you done anything by mistake lately?
Oksana: No, Eddie, all the mistakes I make lately are carefully planned and consciously made. Only later I realize they were mistakes. And you?
Eddie: [Я по ошибке улетел в Москву.]
Oksana: You flew to Moscow by mistake? Wow, you would make a perfect travel partner for Kevin.
Eddie: Oh, yeah, so many lessons would be written about us later. Actually, [улететь] is our next word.
Oksana: [Улететь] means “to fly away” and, in our case, it’s used in the past tense - [улетел]: [Багаж улетел в Москву.]
Eddie: And the natural reaction is the question “When can I have it back?”. The key word here is…
Oksana: [Получить], “to get”, “to receive”.
Eddie: In the previous lesson, we learned the word [получать ] in the meaning of “to earn”. But actually it’s the exact same verb.
Oksana: Right. The difference is that [получать] is an imperfective verb, the one that we use to describe an incomplete or repeated act and [получить] is a perfective verb which describes one specific, completed action.
Eddie: And, of course, Kevin needs one successfully completed action, therefore he asks…
Oksana: [И когда я могу получить его?]
Eddie: Next we have the word “maybe”, which is…
Oksana: [Может быть]
Eddie: We use it in the same situations and in the same position in the sentence as we would in English. Then we have the word for “after tomorrow”.
Oksana: [Послезавтра.] You know the word [завтра], “tomorrow”. Now just put the word [после] before and you’ll get “after tomorrow”. Just as in English, [после] means “after”, but unlike English, the word [после] and [завтра] are written together and make one word. [послезавтра].
Eddie: The next time indicator we heard was…
Oksana: [На следующей неделе.]
Eddie: Which literally translates as “on next week” and means “next week”.
Oksana: Next we have [точно], which means “definitely, for sure, exactly”. Besides the meaning in the dialogue, it can be used as an exclamation like [точно!], “That’s right!”
Eddie: And the last word is probably the easiest, a simple noun which means “clothes”.
Oksana: [Одежда]
Eddie: It’s a noun of feminine gender, that’s why we use the pronoun [моя] with it.
Oksana: [Моя одежда.] The word “all” should also be used in feminine. [Вся моя одежда.]

Lesson focus

Eddie: Today’s grammar point is simple, no cases, no weird conjugations.
Oksana: Right. We’ll talk about time expressions.
Eddie: Of course there’ll be some grammar explanations in the PDF materials for this lesson, but my personal advice, just remember these expressions as they are. For example…
Oksana: [На следующей неделе.]
Eddie: Next week.
Oksana: [На прошлой неделе.]
Eddie: Last week.
Oksana: [На этой неделе.]
Eddie: “This week”. These were the examples with “week”. The pattern’s clear here. The preposition [на], “on”, plus the time adjective “next”, “last” or “this” plus “week” in the prepositional case.
Oksana: Right. Let’s take a look at the examples with year. [В следующем году.]
Eddie: Next year.
Oksana: [В прошлом году.]
Eddie: Last year.
Oksana: [В этом году.]
Eddie: “This year”. Here we used the preposition [в], “in”, a little modified time adjective, the same prepositional case but in masculine gender and the word [год] changed into [году].
Oksana: The time expressions with “month” also require the preposition [в]. [В следующем месяце.]
Eddie: Next month.
Oksana: [В прошлом месяце.]
Eddie: Last month.
Oksana: [В этом месяце.]
Eddie: “This month”. The time adjectives are the same as those with [year] because month is also masculine. The dictionary form of [месяце] is [месяц].
Oksana: So, to sum up, just remember we use [на] with the word “week” and we use [в] with “month” and “year”. [Неделя], “week”, is feminine, therefore we use the time adjectives “this”, “next” or “last” according to feminine gender in the prepositional case. [Год] and [месяц], “year” and “month” are masculine nouns, therefore they and their time adjectives are used according to their rules of masculine gender in the prepositional case.
