INTRODUCTION
Eddie: Eddie here. Beginner Series Season 2, Lesson 16 - Lost in the city. Hello and welcome to Beginner Series Season 2 at RussianPod101.com, where we study modern Russian in a fun, educational format.
Oksana: So brush up on the Russian that you started learning long ago or start learning today.
Eddie: So we’re back with our sometimes unfortunate friend, Kevin. What’s he up to today?
Oksana: Well, he’s out of the airport, finally, and he needs to get some cash to fit in the ridiculously expensive Moscow reality.
Eddie: So let’s listen in and find out whether he gets his money today. The thing I can promise is tons of useful vocab and grammar in this dialogue. Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Eddie: [Извините, Вы не подскажете, где ближайший банкомат?]
Oksana: [Видите автобусную остановку? Напротив остановки-аптека, а банкомат справа от аптеки.]
Eddie: [Вот там?]
Oksana: [Да, между аптекой и магазином.]
Eddie: Once again, more slowly.
Oksana: [Еще раз, медленнее.]
Eddie: [Извините, Вы не подскажете, где ближайший банкомат?]
Oksana: [Видите автобусную остановку? Напротив остановки-аптека, а банкомат справа от аптеки.]
Eddie: [Вот там?]
Oksana: [Да, между аптекой и магазином.]
Eddie: Once again, with the translation.
Oksana: Еще раз, с переводом. Извините, Вы не подскажете, где ближайший банкомат?
Eddie: Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest cash machine is?
Oksana: Видите автобусную остановку? Напротив остановки-аптека, а банкомат справа от аптеки.
Eddie: Can you see the bus stop? Opposite the bus stop there’s a pharmacy, and the cash machine is to the right of the pharmacy.
Oksana: Вот там?
Eddie: Over there?
Oksana: Да, между аптекой и магазином.
Eddie: Yes, between the pharmacy and the shop.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Oksana: To be honest, I personally hate asking for directions because I simply can’t understand what I'm being told.
Eddie: Well, they say most women can’t.
Oksana: And I am just a live example of that. I guess you should be able to draw a map in your mind listening to the directions, but I can’t even read maps, let alone draw them, even in my mind.
Eddie: Don’t worry. All you have to do today is just follow Kevin and help him with his Russian. I'm sure he can put the pieces together as soon as he understands the words.
Oksana: Ok, then. Let’s take a look at those words.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eddie: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we heard was…
Oksana: [Вы не подскажете?]
Eddie: Which is a must for you to remember as it’s the best phrase to use when inquiring about something.
Oksana: [Извините], could work too but it’s totally different level of speech, not something you’d use after going through the second season of lessons.
Eddie: That’s right. Time for an upgrade. So the meaning of the phrase is “Could you tell me…”
Oksana: The verb [подсказывать] actually means “to give a hint” or “to give a clue”.
Eddie: Right. So altogether we can translate it as “Can you please give me a hint and then whatever you want to know. The next word is…
Oksana: [Ближайший] which means “the nearest”, “the closest”.
Eddie: In our dialogue, it was “the nearest cash machine”.
Oksana: [Ближайший банкомат]. [Банкомат] comes from the word “bank” obviously.
Eddie: It’s a mixture of the words “bank” and “automatic”. [Банкомат]. Next we had a phrase for bus stop.
Oksana: [Автобусная остановка.]
Eddie: Where [остановка] is a literal “stop” and [автобусная] comes from [автобус], but we had to make an adjective out of it for this phrase.
Oksana: And [видите] means “you see” or “can you see” literally. It comes from the infinitive [видеть], “to see”.
Eddie: The next word is the one that is actually related to the directions.
Oksana: [Напротив], it means “in front of”. [Напротив остановки.]
Eddie: “In front of the bus stop”. What was in front of the bus stop?
Oksana: [Аптека.]
Eddie: “Pharmacy”. And where is the cash machine?
Oksana: [Справа от аптеки.] We should remember this preposition [справа от ]. Literally, it is translated as “on the right of” and means “to the right of”. “To the left of” would sound as [слева от].
Eddie: To make sure he understood the directions he was given, Kevin points at the place and asks…
Oksana: [Вот там?]. Asking just [там?] would be ok too. [Там] means “there”, and [вот] is actually “here” in the context of “here you go”. But together they make a good phrase “over there”. [Вот] helps you specify the subject.
Eddie: And the answer was…
Oksana: [Да, между аптекой и магазином.] We already know [аптека] means “pharmacy”. [Магазин] means “shop” or “store”. And the word to focus on is [между.]
Eddie: It means “between”. It’s used just like in English, between something and something. Let’s talk more about these preposition of place in our grammar point section.

Lesson focus

Eddie: First of all, let’s name all of the prepositions we’re going to learn today and then explain the usage.
Oksana: Ok, so here they are. [Напротив] means “opposite”. [Возле] means “near”, “next to”. [Справа от] means “to the right of”. [Слева от] means “to the left of”. [Недалеко от] means “not far from”. [Между] means “between”. [За ] means “behind”. [Перед] means “in front of”.
Eddie: The main difficulty about the prepositions of place in Russian is that you have to remember which case you use after them. Some prepositions of place are followed by the genitive case and some are followed by the instrumental case.
Oksana: So the first five words we named are followed by the genitive case. Here are the examples. [Напротив банка.]
Eddie: Opposite the bank.
Oksana: [Возле дома.]
Eddie: Next to the house.
Oksana: [Справа от аптеки.]
Eddie: To the right of the pharmacy.
Oksana: [Слева от школы.]
Eddie: To the left of the school.
Oksana: [Недалеко от остановки.]
Eddie: “Not far from the bus stop.” Here’s a quick reminder for you: feminine nouns in the genitive case change their endings into [И] or [ Ы] as in [ школы, аптеки]. And when it comes to masculine nouns, you just add [а] in the end. [Банка]
Oksana: The next group of prepositions requires the instrumental case. [Между банком и аптекой.]
Eddie: Between the bank and the pharmacy.
Oksana: [За диваном.]
Eddie: Behind the sofa.
Oksana: [Перед домом.]
Eddie: “In front of the house.” The endings for masculine nouns in the instrumental case are [ом ] or [ем]. And for feminine nouns, [ой] or [ей]. And the last tip, to translate a sentence starting with “there is” or “there are”, you should always begin with a preposition of place. [Справа от дивана - шкаф.] “There’s a cupboard to the right of the sofa.” That just about does it for today. Ok, some of our listeners already know about the most powerful tool on RussianPod101.com.
