INTRODUCTION
Yura: Привет всем, с Вами – RussianPod101.com, я – Yura.
Svetlana: А я – Svetlana, здравствуйте, welcome to Intermediate Russian, lesson 20, A Failed Russian Robbery.
Yura: in this lesson we will learn how to conjugate verbs (conjugation I , conjugation II and some irregular verbs) in Present tense to describe current events
Svetlana: the conversation takes place on a street
Yura: And it is between two friends
Svetlana: The speakers will use informal Russian because they are close friends.
Yura: All right, let’s listen to the conversation then.
DIALOGUE
Вова: Смотри, полиция. Интересно, что случилось.
Надя: Похоже, уличное ограбление.
Вова: Вон, парню надевают наручники. Наверное, это он вор.
Надя: Да, смотри, у него из кармана вынимают кошелёк.
Вова: А вон девушка плачет, наверное, это её кошелёк.
Надя: Смотри, он у неё даже сумку украл!
Вова: Да Ей повезло, что его поймали. Такое редко случается.
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Вова: Смотри, полиция. Интересно, что случилось.
Надя: Похоже, уличное ограбление.
Вова: Вон, парню надевают наручники. Наверное, это он вор.
Надя: Да, смотри, у него из кармана вынимают кошелёк.
Вова: А вон девушка плачет, наверное, это её кошелёк.
Надя: Смотри, он у неё даже сумку украл!
Вова: Да Ей повезло, что его поймали. Такое редко случается.
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation with English translation.
Вова: Смотри, полиция. Интересно, что случилось.
Vova: Look, the police. I wonder what happened.
Надя: Похоже, уличное ограбление.
Nadya: Looks like a street robbery.
Вова: Вон, парню надевают наручники. Наверное, это он вор.
Vova: There, they are handcuffing that guy. He's probably the thief.
Надя: Да, смотри, у него из кармана вынимают кошелёк.
Nadya: Yes, look, they are taking a wallet out of his pocket.
Вова: А вон девушка плачет, наверное, это её кошелёк.
Vova: And there's the girl crying, perhaps it is her wallet.
Надя: Смотри, он у неё даже сумку украл!
Nadya: Look, he even stole her bag!
Вова: Да Ей повезло, что его поймали. Такое редко случается.
Vova: Yes... She is lucky he got caught. It doesn't happen often.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: So they are watching the police.
Svetlana: Yes, and they caught the robber.. how lucky is that!
Yura: Yes, I guess it doesn’t happen very often, at least not that fast.
Svetlana: Yes, I agree. Russia is far from being the safest country in the world, so the police will probably ignore a little street theft as long as no one is seriously hurt
Yura: So they can resolve more serious crimes?
Svetlana: that’s right. But in any case even with a little crime, people are encouraged to go to the police station and fill out an application form. You never know.
Yura: I see. Well, I think it is time to go to the vocabulary.
Svetlana: Sounds good to me.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Svetlana: The first word we will take a look at isСлучиться which is translated as “occur” or “happen” and exists only in the third person.
Yura: The conjugation in the present tense is
Svetlana: Случится, Случатся
Yura: In the past tense it is
Svetlana: Случилось / Случилась / Случился / Случились
Yura: Can you give us an example?
Svetlana: Sure, ‘What happened?’ Что случилось? Or Я чувствую, что-то ужасное случится
Yura: ‘I feel something terrible will happen.’ And something terrible did happen in our dialogue–robbery. And this is our next word-ограбление. And it was a street robbery-уличное ограбление.
Svetlana: Yes, уличный means ‘street’, it is an adjective and we can say, Уличный торговец.
Yura: ‘Street vendor’ Okay. Let’s get back to the robbery, did they catch the robber?
Svetlana: Yes, they did. Они поймали вора. The words robber and thief are the same in Russian-вор
Yura: All right, and they put cuffs on him right?
Svetlana: Yes, надели наручники- наручники means cuffs and this word is always used with these two verbs- put- надеть and take off-снять.
Yura: good to know.
Svetlana: And the next verb is украсть and it is translated as “steal” or “rob”. The conjugation in the present tense is Украду / Украдёшь / Украдёт / Украдём / Украдёте / Украдут.
Yura: For example, ‘No one will steal my precious memories.’
Svetlana: Никто не украдёт мои драгоценные воспоминания. Well, of course not.
Yura: well, now let’s see what we have in the grammar point.

Lesson focus

Yura: In this lesson, we're going to learn about the Verb Conjugation in the Present Tense.
Svetlana: As we know, verbs are words describing actions and states. They change according to tenses (present, past, and future), to person (in the present and future), to gender (in the past), and to number. Russian verbs are divided into two conjugations.
Yura: Verbs of the first conjugation end with –ать- ять.
Svetlana: The verbs of the second conjugation end with -ить-еть.
Yura: The examples of the verbs of the first conjugation are...
Читать to read
Знать to know
Слушать to listen
Делать to do
Заниматься to practice
Кататься to ride
Писать to write
Поздравлять to congratulate
Yura: And in this lesson we have,
Вынимать take out
Украсть to steal
Поймать to catch
Svetlana: We conjugate the verbs according to person.
Yura: Let’s use the verb Вынимать, meaning ‘to take out’
Я вынимаю I take out
Ты вынимаешь you take out
Он вынимает he takes out
Мы вынимаем we take out
Вы вынимаете you take out
Они вынимают they take out
Svetlana: And there is just one present tense in Russian so it can be translated as Present simple or Present Progressive in English, depending on the context.
Yura: I see. The verbs of the second conjugation which end with -ить-еть are...
Говорить to speak
Болеть to be sick
Учить to teach
Ходить to walk, to go
Нравиться to like
Купить to buy
Yura: And in this lesson we had
Svetlana: Случиться
Yura: to happen. What about the conjugation of the verb ‘to happen’ from the dialogue?
Svetlana: the verb happen Случиться is an impersonal verb, so it has forms only in the third person, Случится.
Yura: Okay. That’s all for this lesson.
Svetlana: пока пока
