INTRODUCTION
Yura: Привет всем, с Вами – RussianPod101.com, я – Yura.
Svetlana: А я – Svetlana, здравствуйте, welcome to Intermediate lesson 25, Are you Getting Superstitious in Russia?
Yura: In this lesson, we will learn about verbs of motion with different prefixes
Svetlana: while talking about the things we believe in
Yura: The conversation takes place at a party and it is between two friends, Erik and Dasha
Svetlana: The speakers will use informal Russian because they are friends
Yura: All right, let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Эрик: Ты веришь в приметы?
Даша: В некоторые. Например, если я что-то забываю дома – я никогда не возвращаюсь за этой вещью. Это плохая примета.
Эрик: Понятно. А в знаки зодиака веришь?
Даша: Да. Я знаю, что у тебя сильный характер, потому что ты скорпион. А ещё характер можно определить по группе крови.
Эрик: Ммм... нет. Это не для меня. Я верю только в свои силы.
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation one time slowly.
Эрик: Ты веришь в приметы?
Даша: В некоторые. Например, если я что-то забываю дома – я никогда не возвращаюсь за этой вещью. Это плохая примета.
Эрик: Понятно. А в знаки зодиака веришь?
Даша: Да. Я знаю, что у тебя сильный характер, потому что ты скорпион. А ещё характер можно определить по группе крови.
Эрик: Ммм... нет. Это не для меня. Я верю только в свои силы.
Yura: Let’s listen to the conversation with English translation.
Эрик: Ты веришь в приметы?
Erik: Are you superstitious?
Даша: В некоторые. Например, если я что-то забываю дома – я никогда не возвращаюсь за этой вещью. Это плохая примета.
Dasha: Sort of. For example, if I forget something at home – I never go back for it. It's bad luck.
Эрик: Понятно. А в знаки зодиака веришь?
Erik: I see. Do you believe in zodiac signs?
Даша: Да. Я знаю, что у тебя сильный характер, потому что ты скорпион. А ещё характер можно определить по группе крови.
Dasha: Yes. I know that you have a strong character because you are a Scorpio. Also, you can tell a person's character by their blood type.
Эрик: Ммм... нет. Это не для меня. Я верю только в свои силы.
Erik: Hmm... No. It's not for me. I believe only in my own abilities.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yura: So, they are discussing Zodiac signs.
Svetlana: Yes, do you believe in those?
Yura: Hmm, difficult to say, can all people who are born at the same time of the month be the same? I have my doubts.
Svetlana: You are right of course, and now that they have changed it
Yura: Really?
Svetlana: Yep, they moved the Zodiac dates a little, so almost everyone’s sign becomes the one before their previous one.
Yura: You see, how can we believe it?
Svetlana: well, it is still fun to read it and accept only good things. Russians believe in different things, from Zodiac, the Chinese calendar, blood types and of course old Russian superstitions about broken mirrors, black cats, sitting on the suitcase before a trip
Yura: Oh, aren’t Russians supposed to be too religious or too atheist to believe in all this stuff?
Svetlana: Oh, well, neither church nor communism could eradicate those beliefs
Yura: I see. Let’s go over vocabulary then.
Svetlana: Sounds good to me.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Yura: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is Верить в, which means “believe in”.
Svetlana: we use this verb with the preposition в and a noun in accusative case. For example, я верю в приметы-’I believe in signs.’
Yura: The conjugation in the present tense is...
Svetlana: Верю / Веришь / Верит / Верим / Верите / Верят
Yura: Let’s move to the next word, signs or superstitions.
Svetlana: примета, приметы. Yes, this is a useful word in Russia because Russians believe in everything. Black cats, white cats, broken mirrors, and so on.
Yura: Really, do you believe in all that?
Svetlana: well, I don’t take it that seriously but I do try to avoid broken mirrors and black cats.
Yura: all right then, let’s go to the next word.
Svetlana: Некоторый, This pronoun is translated as ‘certain’ or ‘some’ and has the characteristics of an adjective. In other words IT has gender and number, and it changes according to the case of the adjective it is used with.
Svetlana: Некоторый
Yura: masculine
Svetlana: Некоторая
Yura: feminine
Svetlana: Некоторое
Yura: neuter
Svetlana: Некоторые
Yura: plural
Yura: What’s next?
Svetlana: забывать- ‘to forget.’ In the dialogue we had ‘forget something at home’-забывать что-то дома. It is an imperfective verb so it has a notion of forgetting something many times.
Yura: For example?
Svetlana: Я всегда забываю перчатки.
Yura: ‘I always forget my gloves.’
Svetlana: The next word is Возвращаться This imperfective verb means “get back”, “come back” and is followed by the preposition в and a noun in accusative case.
Yura: For example,
Svetlana: Я возвращаюсь домой на поезде.
Yura: ‘I am coming back home by train.’
Svetlana: And the next word combination is Zodiac sign-знак Зодиака.
Yura: it sounds very similar, shall we move on?
Svetlana: Sure, it is определить-’define.’ For example, определить правильное направление
Yura: ‘define the right direction’ or like in the dialogue- ‘tell the character by the blood type.’
Svetlana: Определить характер по группе крови. And группа крови is the last word. It means ‘blood type.’ I guess we are done with the vocab.
Yura: Great, let’s go to the grammar part.

Lesson focus

Yura: In this lesson, we're going to learn about the verbs of motion. Most of them have different prefixes that can help us to guess the meaning of the verb even if we are just seeing this verb for the first time. We will give you both imperfective and perfective verbs.
Svetlana: The most important prefixe is При- which gives the meaning “to arrive”
Yura: Let’s make examples using the prefix При-
Svetlana: Приходить-прийти
Yura: ‘to come’ (on foot)
Svetlana: Приезжать-приехать
Yura: ‘to come’ (by transport).
Yura: Let’s take a sample sentence
Svetlana: Он пришел в гости.
Yura: ‘He came to visit us.’
Svetlana: Great, the next one is У- which gives the meaning “to leave”.
Уходить-уйти ‘to leave (on foot)’
Уезжать-уехать ‘to leave (by transport)’
Svetlana: For example, Он уехал полчаса назад.
Yura: ‘He left half an hour ago’
Svetlana: The next one is В-, Во-, Въ- gives the meaning “to enter”. Входить-войти ‘to enter’;
Въезжать-въехать ‘to enter’ (by car).
Svetlana: Next is Вы- which gives the meaning “to exit.” For example, Выходить-выйти ‘to exit’ (on foot), Выезжать-выехать ‘to exit’ (by transport).
Yura: Let’s check a sample sentence.
Svetlana: Во сколько вы выехали?
Yura: ‘What time did you leave?’
Svetlana: The next prefixe group is Под-, подъ-, подо - which gives the meaning “to approach”.
Подходить-подойти ‘to come to’, ‘to approach’ (on foot)
Подъезжать-подъехать ‘to approach’ (by car)
Svetlana: The next group is От-, отъ-, ото- which gives the meaning “step back”. For example, Отходить-отойти- to step back (on foot), Отъезжать-отъехать to move back (by transport).
Yura: The next one is До- which gives the meaning “get as far as” or “to reach”.
Svetlana: Right, for example, Доходить-дойти ‘to reach on foot’;
Доезжать-доехать ‘to reach’ (by transport)
Svetlana: The example could be Мы доедем через пять минут.
Yura: ‘We will reach it in 5 minutes.’
Svetlana: and the last one is Пере- which gives the meaning of “to cross”.
Переходить-перейти ‘cross’ (on foot)
Переезжать-переехать ‘cross’ (by transport)
Yura: Wow, we have a lot of things to remember.
Svetlana: But knowing these prefixes will definitely help you to understand the verbs of motion better.
Yura: Absolutely. Well dear listeners, this is it for this lesson and for this series.
Svetlana: We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Outro

Yura: Bye, everyone!
Svetlana: до свидания!
