Oksana: [Здравствуйте, с Вами Оксана ]. I’m Oksana and today I’m going to work in your life attitude a little and boost your optimism. We all have our periods of extreme happiness, butterflies in the stomach, or just a calm, stable life with nothing to complain about. We also have dark periods in our lives due to objective or subjective reasons. Sometimes, even with cruel failures and unbearable hardships. And today’s proverb is supposed to give us a little hope and believe that there is no such trouble that lasts forever. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel and a good time is sure to come, eventually.
Oksana: How do we say that in Russian? [Будет и на наше улице праздник!]. Literally, it means “There will be holiday on our street, too!”.
Oksana: [Будет] means “will be”. [И] can be translated as “too”, “also” in this case, although its primary meaning is “and”. [На нашей улице] means “on our street”, if we translate it word for word, and [праздник] is the word for “holiday”. I can think of several English translations of this proverb. For example, “The sun will shine on our street, too!” or “The sun will shine on our side of the fence!” or “As the day draws to the end” or “Every dog has its day!”, “Our day will come”, “We too will have our day!”, and so on. Usually people say this phrase to themselves when their frustration with their failure grows into anger and they’re ready to take radical actions to prove everyone’s wrong and come out of the situation a winner. In this case, the intonation of the phrase sounds a little bit creepy: [Будет и на нашей улице праздник!]. Like the person is plotting something and is confident in his success. You can also say this to your partner if you have common business and it doesn’t seem working out at the moment. The intonation in this case should be energetic and inspirational. Thank you for listening and wishing you lots of holidays on your streets. [Пока!].
