Learn Russian with RussianPod101.com! Today was like a scene from an old romantic movie filmed in Russia. When you got out of bed in the morning in Russia, it was like any other day, except you felt a little lonely. Instead of having something to look forward to every night in Russia, you spend your day with your Russian work colleagues, and then you return to your hotel room alone with little to do in the evenings. You’ve walked around the Russian town you’re staying in many times and you’ve frequented its restaurants over the last month, but you’re tired of dining on Russian food by yourself. And you’re not into drinking lots of Russian vodka alone to drown your sorrows. So as you daydream while walking through the Russian streets on your way to work, you’re quite surprised when a familiar face stops you and greets you in Russian. She says in Russian, “Hey, remember me?” You respond in Russian, “Of course! How are you? I’m so happy to see you my friend!” You engage in some polite conversation, all the while waiting to ask her to spend some more time with you in the evening in Russian. Will you work up the nerve?

Learn Russian with RussianPod101.com! All around you at the dinner table, your Russian colleagues are raising and clinking their glasses and toasting each other in Russian. It’s been going on for a few minutes now, and you’re starting to get the hang of it (or maybe the Russian vodka is starting to kick in). You listen carefully to their Russian toasts, and you nod and smile politely as your colleagues go on and on in Russian. “To the meeting!” one exclaims in Russian. Surely, you think to yourself in Russian, this must end soon so we can eat! There’s a smorgasbord of Russian treats in front of you, but you don’t dare dive in until the merriment dies down. After a few more rounds of Russian toasts, you can tell you’re starting to feel a little tipsy. You hope the Russian colleagues you’re meeting for the first time don’t notice that all of the vodka is turning your cheeks rosy and eyes glassy. Of course, just as you are worrying the signs of your intoxication might be showing, your Russian boss turns to you and starts to toast you, saying your name. You immediately turn red and wonder what will happen next!

Learn Russian with RussianPod101.com! Even though the paparazzi doesn’t follow you when you walk into a hotel, you still expect a certain level of service when you travel. And you expect nothing less from this Russian hotel. So when you walk into the lobby of the Russian hotel, you start reviewing your mental checklist. There’s a bar to the left, presumably stocked with Russian vodkas and other adult beverages. Check. There’s a lobby to the right with lots of comfy couches and Russian tourists, but you hear no screaming children. Check. Finally, there seems to be a good restaurant straight ahead. You walk over and check out its menu, and finally it seems you’ll be able to get your beloved Russian beef stroganoff. Now, it’s time to check in, so you approach the desk clerk, ask for your room keys, and then start to quiz him in Russian about the room amenities.

Learn Russian with RussianPod101.com. You are in Russia on business and you have a horrible toothache. After being at work all day, dealing with excruciating pain in your mouth, you decide you had better take care of it and go to the dentist. You make an appointment for after work and the second it’s time to leave the office, you jet out of there and rush to the best Russian dentist you can find. While you are in the waiting room, there is a little boy and his mother that you cannot help but overhear because they are extremely loud. The little boy is misbehaving and running around the waiting room. His mother gets up from her chair and tries to grab the boy by his collar. He slips away from her and she replies in a stern Russian voice, “Do not run away from me. Come here now and behave yourself. You are making me mad.” She gives him a look that you remember your mom giving to you when you misbehaved. Obviously, the little boy knew this look too, because he sat down next to his mother and said in broken Russian, “I’m sorry, Mother. I won’t do it again.” The mother has a look of skepticism on her face, but you are grateful that the craziness in the waiting room has died down for the time. In the next moment or so, the Russian dentist’s office is quiet…until the little boy races to the other side of the room again. The receptionist comes out from behind closed doors and calls your name. Thank goodness it is your turn. Maybe now you can get some relief, from both this toothache and the other little pain…
