You have been in Russia for two days now, traveling with your spouse. The Russian hotel clerks have become quite familiar to you. They say hello in Russian to you each morning as you leave, and again each night as you return from your sightseeing in Russia. Tonight as you come into the hotel from walking around St. Petersburg all day, the Russian clerk greets you in Russian as he always does, but this time he says something else afterwards in Russian. You have no idea what he said, so you just smile and walk away. The next day when you leave you notice the Russian clerk doesn’t greet you anymore…did you offend him last night? Could he have taken your silence as being rude? It would have been very easy to learn the Russian phrase to answer him…

You are doing a very good thing today. You moved to St. Petersburg about a month ago for work. Since then your son has been playing with the little Russian boy next door almost every day. Tonight your Russian neighbors asked if you would watch their son so they could have a much-needed break and you agreed. This will give you a chance to get to know your son’s new best friend as well as score some brownie points with your new neighbors. But about halfway through the night the little Russian boy began telling you something in Russian and rubbing his stomach. You have no idea what he is saying. You thought maybe he had a stomach ache, but you didn’t want to give him medicine without his mother’s permission. Good, here’s his mom now. Why is she so mad? She is yelling at you in Russian…what could you have possibly done wrong?

You have been waiting for weeks to get into the new Russian restaurant down the street, and finally you are here. You and your spouse are so thrilled to have gotten the opportunity to eat here while you are travelling in St. Petersburg. The atmosphere is perfect-romantic and quiet. The Russian host lays the menus in front of you. You thank him in Russian, he tells you he will give you a few moments to look over the Russian menu, and he walks away. You really don’t know what you were expecting, but for some reason you were surprised to find the entire menu in Russian…well, of course it is! The waiter approaches your table and asks if you are ready to order. You motion questioningly at the menu and try to tell him in Russian that you cannot read it. He asks in Russian what you like and he will order for you…but you can’t even tell him that. So, much to your embarrassment in this very exclusive Russian restaurant, your husband acts out the motions of a chicken. Nice. Next time just listen to RussianPod101.
