INTRODUCTION
Yuriy: Hello and welcome back to RussianPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate, Season 2, lesson 2 - Where Did That Cheeky Russian Spirit Hide My Wallet? I’m Yuriy.
Elena: С вами Елена. Всем привет.
Yuriy: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use the preposition “в” in the Prepositional case.
Elena: The conversation takes place at a cafe.
Yuriy: The speakers are friends, so they’ll be using informal Russian. Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Бен: Ника, а кто такой домовой?
Ника: Домовой? Это домашний дух. Считается, что он живёт в каждой квартире или доме.
Бен: Это добрый дух или злой?
Ника: Все зависит от его отношения. При хорошем отношении он помогает, а при плохом – может и навредить.
Бен: Например?
Ника: Ну, например, он может шуметь ночью, бить посуду или даже разбрасывать мусор.
Бен: Понятно. Теперь я знаю, кто разбил все чашки в моём доме.
Yuriy: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Бен: Ника, а кто такой домовой?
Yuriy: Nika, who is a brownie?
Ника: Домовой? Это домашний дух. Считается, что он живёт в каждой квартире или доме.
Yuriy: Brownie? He's a home spirit. It's believed that one lives in every house or apartment.
Бен: Это добрый дух или злой?
Yuriy: Is he a kind or evil spirit?
Ника: Все зависит от его отношения. При хорошем отношении он помогает, а при плохом – может и навредить.
Yuriy: Everything depends on his attitude. With a good attitude he helps, and with a bad – he can harm.
Бен: Например?
Yuriy: For example?
Ника: Ну, например, он может шуметь ночью, бить посуду или даже разбрасывать мусор.
Yuriy: Well, for example, he can make noise at night, break dishes, or even scatter the garbage.
Бен: Понятно. Теперь я знаю, кто разбил все чашки в моём доме.
Yuriy: I see. Now I know who broke all the cups in my house.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuriy: Elena, do many people in Russia believe in these brownies?
Elena: Some people, yes. For example, my friend, if she can't find something important in her apartment – like she was sure that she put her wallet on the table and now she can't find it on the table or anywhere else in her apartment—she thinks that it's brownie's prank. And many other people do too.
Yuriy: So then what do they do?
Elena: Oh, you can find lots of advice on this topic. For example, some people recommend you loudly say “Brownie, brownie, please return my things with which you are playing.” And many people believe that it works!
Yuriy: (Laughs) If I lose my socks I know who to ask for help now! Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Yuriy: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word for this lesson is the verb...
Elena: “разбить” or the reflexive verb “разбиться” which can be translated into English as “to break” or “to be broken”.
Yuriy: Unlike in English, you use the verb “разбить” and reflexive verb “разбиться” only when you talk about something made from glass or porcelain. For example...
Elena: Вор разбил окно в моем доме.
Yuriy: "The thief broke a window in my house."
Elena: Я случайно разбил эту вазу.
Yuriy: "I accidentally broke this vase." You can also use these verbs with the following words...
Elena: “egg,” “plane”, or other means of transportation, and for a person who has died in an air crash, a car accident, or fallen down from a tall height. In this case, the reflexive verb “разбиться” is often used.
Yuriy: Can you give us some examples?
Elena: Sure! Возле Канарских островов разбился самолёт.
Yuriy: "The plane crashed near the Canary Islands."
Elena: С тех пор, как её муж разбился в авиакатастрофе прошло три года.
Yuriy: "Three years have passed since her husband was in a plane crash." Ok, I think that's clear. The next word for this lesson is...
Elena: The noun “дух”, which can be translated as “spirit”, a supernatural being.
Yuriy: However, in the Christian religion the word “дух” has another meaning. It is the non-physical part of a person, which is connected with God, and by its nature is a part of God in every person. You can see this word in religious literature. Let's give some examples.
Elena: Древние люди верили, что в лесу жили лесные духи.
Yuriy: "Ancient people believed that forest spirits lived in the forest."
Elena: Вы знаете, как вызывать духов?
Yuriy: "Do you know how to invoke the spirits?" Ok, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Yuriy: As you know, the prepositional case is called “prepositional” because it's always used with prepositions.
Elena: In this lesson, we'll focus on one of the main and most widely used prepositions in the Prepositional case, “в”. This can be translated as “in” or “at”.
Yuriy: When do you use the preposition “в”?
Elena: Well, the first rule is this - you use “в” when you
talk about an enclosed space.
Yuriy: In other words, when you want to point out a place or subject inside of which, or within which something or someone is situated, or where an action takes place.
Elena: It's also used with nouns denoting buildings,
institutions, and organizations, as well as with the words “группа” meaning "group" and “класс” meaning "class".
Yuriy: Let’s give some examples to make this more clear.
Elena: Я учусь в университете.
Yuriy: "I'm studying at university. "
Elena: В моём классе двадцать два ученика.
Yuriy: "There are twenty-two students in my class."
Elena: Тетради лежат в портфеле.
Yuriy: "The notebooks are in the briefcase." So, listeners, if you want to say that something or someone is inside some building like a hospital, theater or supermarket, or inside some thing, like a bag, cupboard, closet and so on, please use the preposition “в”.
Elena: We also use “в” with the names of countries and their administrative parts, as well as with continents.
Yuriy: Administrative parts could refer to a city, town, country, republic, federation, province, village, state, prefecture, and so on.
Elena: For example, Кенгуру живут в Австралии.
Yuriy: “Kangaroos live in Australia.”
Elena: Ты когда-нибудь был в Японии?
Yuriy: “Have you ever been to Japan?”
Elena: Я встретил Новый год с семьёй в деревне.
Yuriy: “I welcomed the New Year with my family in the village.” Listeners, there are more very important rules about the usage of the preposition “в” in the lesson notes, so be sure to check them out.
